Undercoat

My Casey is nearly 9 months old and I guess I got a little behind the eight ball with his grooming. a few weeks ago I found a tangle behind one ear. So the next grooming session I got down and dirty with the brushing and we're still fighting the undercoat. It actually seems more like puppy fluff that didn't come out and now is buried underneath his maturing coat. I don't remember this problem with either Coop or Randy. I remember Cooper blowing his coat the first time and I would just walk by and pull big tuffs of fur from him. I was prepared for this with Randy and it wasn't a problem. Casey isn't blowing his coat, he just has tons of this puppy-like fluff. I groomed for one hour today and really still did not make a dent in it. I brush him twice during the week, just a little touch-up, and really good on weekends.

Are you only using a brush? Brushing, even with a pin brush, doesn't sufficiently address the undercoat, it just makes them look pretty on top but leaves loads of undercoat to knot up. I use a metal doggie comb after the pin brush and always get at least double the amount that comes out with just brushing. BTW putting a little talcum powder behind the ears (where they can't lick it off) after you have brushed and combed out that area really helps to keep the hair there from going into those nasty knots. I use unscented baby powder...put on very lightly.
