upcoming show and etiquette

Hi everyone, there is a specialty and all breed in Hamilton, Ohio in the end of May. I am wondering if anyone is going. I also have a question. Is it proper etiquette to bring a dog that is not being shown to a dog show?

Many of Megan's friends will be there and i'm sure they would like to see Luna again and meet Jake. Also if i take the dogs do i need to bring shot records with me? With 4H we have a proof of vaccination form that the vet fills out.

I hope to see some of you guys there!

There is no AKC requirement to either have the shots, or provide proof. I generally carry a copy of the rabies certs with me, digitally, but nothing else. It depends on the jurisdiction. Some states say you have to have a health certificate, but I have never gotten one, and have never been asked to provide one.

You will have to look at the premium list to see if that club allows unentered dogs. My show does, but most don't. There is also no AKC requirement against bringing unentered dogs, it is completely up to the club (despite what ASSA kept saying over the loudspeaker at the National last year, argh).

What Rachel said, check the premium for the show. (It should be on their website.) Both shows I've attended (as a spectator) this year did not permit unentered dogs.

thanks for answering!

I checked the AKC schedule and it's 5 straight days of Shows! That weekend at the fairgrounds in Hamilton, OH they have a specialty, a designated specialty (whatever that is),a sweepstakes, 4 all breed, 2 obedience, and 5 junior shows. Several different clubs are doing this so I guess I would need to contact them all. The only real bummer for me is no Mixed Breeds. Luna is working on obedience so I hope to find a show for her as well as for Jake.

I still need to get her spayed and registered but I want Megan and I to see a show before we enter a show.

If anyone is entering the shows and needs an extra pair of hands, either junior or adult, PLEASE let me know. We want the experience! Also if you don't mind a 14 year old junior handler shadowing you I would be in your debt!

Can you tell I am excited? :biggrin2:

I would say attend sans dog. Especially if your going to watch and learn! Without the dog you can focus completely on whats going on there and talk to people. and shop:yes:
I know last year I used my 13 year old niece at shows when my mom couldn't come and I had two dogs entered, it was great for the extra set of hands!

I agree. I always want to bring Layla, but I know I'm at the show to study. Also, I like to talk with the exhibitors, and many won't appreciate their Sheltie being distracted by your Sheltie.

good point. I guess we can't be extra hands if our hands are full with our own dogs  I just hate leaving them home for that long. And Megan is being stubborn and doesn't want to go unless she can show Jake.

But he isn't registered yet and while I'm leaning strongly towards neutering him I would like to have an expert opinion on him. I'm trying to contact some more sheltie breeders around here. We have 4H showmanship training next week and at least one of the parents or grandparents is a breeder. One breeder said he has a big coat, which I think is a good thing but that alone won't stop me from neutering him. He also is so good at sitting that standing on command is a challenge :eek2:

But with the juniors stuff I think she should watch a show before she participates. One of her friends took a best puppy in conformation and a best junior at a show recently so maybe she will be there. Just have to find her email address.

We have a dog show coming up in a few weeks. We plan on going and Mark would love to take Zak. I want to but at the same time he will get excited and want to play with the other dogs and I am sure that would not be appreciated. I have seen a few people out there with their dogs.
