use of bitter apple to curve barking

Has anyone ever used Bitter Apple to curve barking? My little Keely (15 months) jumps up & down and barks aggressively everytime we put the TV on at anything that moves: person, animal, words moving across screen. EVEN THE NEWS SETS HER OFF. I was told that you could put it in a spray bottle and sqirt it in their mouth if a dog continues to bark. I have tried the Lemon Juice but she has grown sort of fond of it! I am desperate. SHE WILL NOT STOP BARKING AT THE TV. I wanted to try this but wasn't sure if anyone has ever tried this before. She barks at every commercial (I know I hate commercials too but this is rediculous!) she barks at all games involving a ball (baseball, basketball football...) and she despises cartoon or cartoon figures: EVRYTHING! She just flips out barking and jumping. I have tried the click & treat but that does not seem to distract her for very long. When she is laying quietely with tv running, I will say "Yes good girl!" She immediately looks at tv, jumps up barking and running back in forth in front of it. I have recorded about 14 Ceasar Milan shows and I cannot even watch them because of her. HELP ME PLEASE!

I haven't tried bitter apple/water mix in a squirt bottle, YET, but here's what we're doing...

Megan is 11 months old and when she goes to inappropriately bark or even give her little grunt of sorts, we gently but firmly grab/hold her snout, and give a firm "NO BARK". She is getting to the point where I just hold my index finger out and say "no bark", and she stops on her own.

When she stops barking, we praise her like crazy and even occassionally give her a treat.

Others here will have all sorts of suggestions, I learned this one both from Googling it AND a fellow Sheltie owner while on our motor home trip!

In the Agility classes I've been in, they use Binaca for excessive barkers. Most dogs don't need to get more than couple of shots of it before they decide to control themselves.

If she is watching TV quietly and when you say "good girl", and she immediately turns to the TV and starts barking, you have mis-cued her somewhere.

Please don't get upset, I by no mean am picking on you, I AM THE ONE THAT HAS a pup that sits and stays when I say "Come here" I messed up somewhere.:uhoh:(Mad at myself over this one)

How we fixed it is by changing the command. Now I whistle to get him to Come!:rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

Why don't you try having a dish of treats when she is quiet in front of the TV and quietly slipping one in front of her when she is non reactive to the TV and just making no comment.

Maybe start having the TV on with no sound for awhile, and then quiet sound. I would think that is the first thing that they notice about TV. Also is your TV a big screen. I would think that would make a huge difference with a dog.

Dr Shelli can maybe confirm this or someone else smarter than me, but I thought that dogs could not truly discern the TV screen.

(We don't have TV, so I don't know what MMM would do with it. When we watch a DVD on the laptop, he is unable to see it because he is never at the right angle.)

I would be worried about accidentally spraying it in your dog's eyes.

Also, when you squirt dogs with water or anything else as a correction, you're supposed to do it in a way so that they don't realize it is you squirting it. This way they don't associate you with something bad and you want them to never know when its coming. Otherwise they'll still bark when you're not around.

Yea. Its a big screen. But she is reactive to the SMALL screens in bedroom and kitchen. I have tried the bowl of Kibble when we watch but as soon as she swallows it... she then barks.

I tried the squirt bottle with water and she thinks its a game. She tries to catch the water as I squirt it.

Perhaps try holding her snout when she barks and tell her NO BARK at the sametime. It takes a few times, but once they begin to get it, it helps.

It really is the only that has worked so far for us

That is so funny!!!! Have you tried the "come here" command to get her to sit and stay?

Do you ignore your dog (it is difficult to do, I know) when she is barking? That helped a bit with Sandstorm, although he doesn't bark at the T.V. like your dog, he does do it enough so that it is annoying. I would use the holding the snout method too, I think I will try that.
