UTI...here we go again

I totally agree.

Go back to basics and reintroduce other supplements/treats one at a time and spaced out over time so that you can isolate root cause.

That's how I've had to deal with Bacca's issues.

I did that with her first round of uti's. I stopped giving her vibrant pets for a month and it didnt make a difference with her uti

So sorry to hear this news, Randi. I hope you find an answer soon...the not knowing what's causing it is so tough. Sending some prayers your way for Bailey that this is the LAST ONE!!

Sorry to hear about all this. Honestly, they seem to go in good/bad cycles with health issues.

Question: Just scrolling through the forums, there seem to be quite a few on this UTI issue. I understand it is more prevalent in females, but is this something even more common in Sheltie females? I never had this problem with my females Dobes.

So sorry to hear this!! I know we have talked before about bladder infections because True kept getting them. Hopefully they can figure something out...it can become sooo frustrating! My prayers are with you!

So sorry to hear about Bailey's UTI. I know this is a really frustrating problem for you, too.... especially since the spay was supposed to clear it up. I hope you and your vet can find the answer!

Buffy sends Bailey her "concerned face."

Sorry to hear that Bailey is suffering with yet another UTI. Poor baby.

#1 preventative for UTI is lots and lots of fresh water.

With this many UTI's I'd give a hard look at the water bowl..make sure that it does not have chewed edges or cracks or rough surfaces that could harbor germs. I'd recommend that you have several stainless water bowls alternate a new one every day, washing the previous one in the dishwasher on the hottest cycle.

Consider filtered water for a while to help her system heal.

If you are on a well source, have your water tested.

Thanks everyone for ur support and advice. It means a lot and i really appreciate it.

Janet, she drinks botteled water. I usually wash her water dish every day. Sometimes i do forget. I will buy two stainless steal dishes this weekend and alternate bowls. Im also gonna start adding a little water to her meals.

in humans majority of chronic kidney problems are well treated by herbal remedies, such as Uva ursi, as well as cranberries. I would go this road and investigate your options...

Was just going to check on this, Have you gone to a holistic vet in your area? sometimes they have suggestions for herbal remedies that combined with traditional western medicine can be much more effective at keeping stuff like this at bay.

Living in the close proximity to Chicago everything is available here...I do know few holistic vets in my area but thankfully we did not have need to go beyond our routine shots...
What are you facing is appear to be chronic situation, probably related to multitude of reasons such as some anatomical impediment for free urine flow, food, supplements, water, for all you know her parents lines might carry predisposition for kidney stone formation.... While it is not clear with humans how much stone formation is genetic vs environmental I would suspect there is no simple answer either, but we are mostly what we eat so I would start there...
therefore I see need of going holistic road, starting from adding some natural herbal remedies that have been used for loooong time to heal kidney /urinary problems, possibly adding something to the water like cube of broth to make your pup drink more to flush those kidneys more often. I would also check on homeopatic remedies X dilution, while it would never be a first line treatment, chronic problems when something just is not working right is great for homeopatic remedies...
I would also consider going off kibble and start home cooking or raw food diet...I know few people whose dogs developed kidney stones with obstructions and had to have surgeries- lots of mess and $$ but after changing to home cooking or raw food kidney functions were no problems anymore... it is anecdotal evidence of course, but it is eating processed food that lead humans to all those wonderful social diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes...

Update on Bailey's UTI...

Bailey finished her antibiotics on Tuesday. I brought in a urine sample yesterday. I got the results back today. It's good and bad. Her crystals are gone. yay!!! But she still has a little bit of the UTI. The infection has decreased significantly, which is good. So, she's back on the same antibiotics for 10 more days. We couldn't do a urine culture because she hasn't been off the antibiotics for a week. Also, the vet said that a lot of urine cultures come back negative when the infection is this low. If she still has the infection after this round of antibiotics than we will do the urine culture.

If Bailey does get another UTI right after this one clears up, I will go to an holistic vet. I found one in Brooklyn that is 30 minutes away with no traffic.
