very upset

His weight loss may be attributed to that broken tooth~

I have my hunches, that as soon as he gets that taken care of,and another special meal added to his routine,he will be back in healthy weight.

Please don't ever question your ability as a mom to those pups. You are a very sensitive, loving mom. Justice knows that, and besides,he could'nt tell ya about his tooth. Pleasecdon't beat your self up.

Sending lots of hugs!!

Ember has the bad tooth..........

bad mom ??!!?? no way, heck i wanna come back as one of your shelties.
keeping Justice and Ember in my prayers

Sorry to hear of the weight issues and the tooth. Is Justice fixed? It might just be his metabolism. Don't beat yourself up over it! These are things that are easily missed when you have multiple dogs but you did notice it regardless! That makes you a GOOD mom!

Hoping it's nothing major with Justice. Keep us posted about Ember's tooth extraction.

Just curious, what does a cracked tooth even look like? I wouldn't even know.
And seriously, don't feel bad. Miko lost about a pound and was like 17.5lbs when I went to vet. I felt so bad. I'm slowly getting the weight back on. The vet would like him close to 19, so I got a ways to go.

On the upside, at least Justice is overall healthy (we hope) and weight loss shouldn't be too major, especially if you always had a hard time keeping weight on him. Versus, y'know, a dog like Miko with k/d and losing weight. yikes!

You are NOT a bad mom!

No Justice is intact. He has the metabolism of a bird always has. I was just so upset this afternoon first but his weight and than the tooth within 5 minutes. I just felt that as a vet I should have realized he was getting thin way before this. I just I was looking but not seeing. I also groomed him today and he blew all his undercoat so he really feels bad not. That when my brain went no oh the scale confirmed it :(

I dewormed everyone this evening(was going to anyway for the gathering), up his food by 25%(measured not guessed) and I personally monitored him eating this evening in a different roomfor the girls. Sure enough pig 1 and pig 2(aka Diva and Ember) came in to see if they could steal a meal I had to chase them away 3 times! He ate grest no issues and he is very active so I hope it is just a simple fix.

Thanks everyone for your support of a neurotic sheltie mom.

Well in Ember's case the biggest on the top right called the 4th premolar or carnasial tooth is fracture(also called a slab fracture) and the outside wall was broken off and hanging there attached to the gingiva(gum) like a flap and the point was broken off as well. It had a ton of tartar on it so it didn't happen recently.:(

I took off the flap of tooth and the pulp isn't that exposed and what is, is dead. SO the tooth needs to come out or it may abscess as it extends into the gum line.

This link shows a tooth that looks exactly like Ember's tooth

WARNING- DO NOT GO TO THE NEXT PAGE ON THE LINK IFYOU ARE SQUEAMISH. But if your intesterested it shows the exact procedure involved in removing the tooth.

I didn't know Noah had a broken canine until the vet saw him. Unfortunately, this was discovered only three weeks before he died. The tip was broken off, so it didn't affect him at all.

Shelties are such a stoic dog. Dr. Ivan is always reminding me of this when I take the dogs in (and Liam and Emma were prime examples). I know you feel guilty - we all do when we miss something. Unfortunately, they can't talk and tell us how they feel and what hurts.

Well Dr. Shelli, I just joined the "How did you not know" club. Tinsel had been licking at his sheath and scrotum since the last time he was trimmed. It isn't a constant thing just occasional but enough that I was getting concerned. He had acted up and got a little razor graze so I had put some Desidan ointment on it and all looked well except for where his neuter incision was. He continued to bother it enough that I mentioned it to the groomer yesterday and asked her to be very careful if she decided to trim again. I got back to pick him up and that's when I found out that he still has stitches in. It never occurred to me that the Humane Society vets would use non dissolving stitches but sure enough, you could feel them. Poor guy must have felt quite itchy at times. He goes in on Wednesday so they can remove them under anesthetic since the skin has grown over but I feel terrible that I didn't catch it. He had to go and have his rear dew claws removed with the laser so they will do that at the same time. Bad me for not putting my glasses on when I examined his incision back in December.
