Vitamins for Skin/Coat Health

That's a lot cheaper than a large jar of Vibrant Pets!

That's true. But read the ingredients on your Vibrant Pets jar. Linatone only has oils...no probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins etc. You'd need to buy those all separately.

True again, but when I took the jar to the vet he was only concerned about one ingredient when Smudge had his mange - Omega 3 fatty acids. He had the vet tech turn it over and look for that one ingredient only. I keep asking myself if my vet wasn't concerned about the other ingredients when Smudge's face was falling off then maybe it wasn't a big deal for me to worry about it either. :confused2:

I'll try the other, and if I don't like it I still have my Vibrant Pets jar sitting in my room. I can always go back.

After looking at the ingredients this product doesn't have omega 3 fatty acids. I thought it was a coat supplement? :confused2:

I don't know. I might look into just supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids.

OK I looked it up. It contains primarily Omega 6 which is linoleic acid. Plant oils are high in this. Omega 6 does do a good job(better than Omega 3) of supporting skin and coat health and that is why it was popular but then research showed that Omega 6 promoted the production of pro inflammatory products that would sometimes increase inflammation and platelet clumping with its by products.

This is what caused the move to the use of fish oil products that are high in Omega 3 and EP and DHA. Omega 3(linolenic acid) is antiinflammatory and immune boosting. It has benefits for the heart, brain, joints, and immune system.

If both Omega 6 and Omega 3 are present they compete for metabilism so that is why we don't recommend supplementing with Omega 6.

So for Smudge I would stick with Omega 3 based products.

Ok. Maybe I am just used to stuff boasting "omega 3 fatty acids". I didn't know what the omega 3 fatty acids were actually called.

hmm, omega -3 can be plant based or animal based. I am wondering if it has to be animals based for dogs? Anyway I love VP for my dogs, they are healthy and their coat look great. I think VP with all those inclusions of enzymes etc is best single product one can find on the present market. I do not give it daily though, few days on , then skip, etc. As with everything else, it is opportunistic diet for us.

I don't know. Never thought about it. I suppose a good plant source could be use. Although I think EPA and DHA concentrations are now being thought of as more important than overall Omega 3 levels. Those are naturally higher in fish than plants in general, save microalgae. Fish being an easier source than mircoalgae, I suppose.

As always, this is great information, Dr. Shelli. I didn't know the difference between the two either. Thank you!!! :biggrin2:

Ok Im confused, perhaps im reading it wrong though....your saying Omega 6 (linolenic Acid) causes inflammations with its by products, but than your saying Omega 3 (Linolenic Acid) is good....How can they both be the same???? or am I reading it wrong and missing something...which could be the case :)
