Waterless Foaming Shampoos?

Has anyone tried any of the waterless foaming shampoos? I spotted one made by earth bath and was curious how well they work.

Vash gets a bit stinky in between his baths, I've tried some of the smelly sprays but that usually ends up making "Wet Dog" smell like "Baby Powdered Wet Dog" which usually makes me want to find a place to vomit.

so do puppies smell better than adult shelties?- I posted in the other thread- grooming/trimming that Cranberry has only had two baths- and the first was really just to give him a bath while he was still a puppy-a little guy. He has played in swamp pond water practically since he came home- comes in muddy- dry him off and little clean dog again in a couple hours. he's never smelled funky. -except for the poo incident which brought about the second bath. Callie doesn't really smell that much either- now that I think about it. :smile2:

I never really tried to place the smell before, it was just so over powering, pungent and gross that I just backed away and ran for the pup cologne.

In retrospect, the smell is probably coming from one of the treats I leave Vash while I'm off at work. He's a bit sloppy when it comes to things like bully sticks or other chew's. He'll wrap his front paws around the item and gnaw on it all day.

What ever the smell is seems to come from the ruff under his chin and his front paws, so the bully sticks make total sense. I honestly should've remembered that vile smell after leaving a bully stick in Vash's crate one night. I was in deep sleep in the middle of a dream and rolled over, Vash saw me move got up and started panting in my face with bully stick breath. At which point my dream ended with a "What in gods name is that smell?" quote.

one of the reasons that I go for less smelly chews- flossies, lamb ears are some. I'm looking into ordering some deer antlers- sounds like a good chew- we'll see if the pups like them. I'm sure Cranberry will- he likes to chew on just about anything :smile2:

I use Plush Puppy's Wonderwash though I may try CC's Show Off when I need to replace the bottle.

I don't use it all over, only to spot clean areas such as the feet, belly and rear end.

I understand how waterless shampoo would come in handy in the show ring, but for the rest of us - if your dog needs a bath, take him to the bath tub and give him a good scrubbing! If your dog needs a bath then it needs a bath.

I use waterless shampoos between actual baths for taking Edan to Therapy Dog visits.

One of the "rules" for therapy visits, under TDI rules, is the dog has to be clean. Well, Edan gets a bath at the groomer every other month. I don't want to bathe him any more than that because I don't want to dry out his skin. Spot cleaning the locations I mention above, the spots that are going to be the most dirty/unsanitary between groomer visits, helps me meet the requirements for my visits while not damaging the fur or skin.

Does everyone need a dry shampoo? Probably not. I have found it useful in my circumstance though.

Jessica,

The waterless shampoo does not get down to their skin. The problem with overbathing your dogs is that it dries out the skin.

I only use the waterless shampoo and Ice on Ice to brush them out between full baths. It only really goes about to 1/2 to 1 inch away from their skin.

I use these instead of spritzing with water when I brush the dogs. You DO spritz with water don't you when you brush? Don't you think that it would be better to condition then while you brush them?

Just wondering what is Ice on Ice and also what is the reason behind spritzing with water when you brush? I have never done this but I don't really know anything about grooming....

Ive found the Ice on Ice which is sort of a spray on conditioner its supposed to repel dirt, urine, and act as a sunscreen, but it leaves their coats with a film on them feeling almost slimy.

You went the coat with water so when you brush you dont break the hair/fur.

I use Ice on Ice and never found the coat to feel slimy afterward.

Maybe different chemistry in the oils of the fur (different pH levels, etc) react differently with it. Much like how some people can use one brand of shampoo/conditioner but someone else finds it leaves a residue on the hair. I don't know, just wondering out loud about why different folks can have different experiences with the same product.

Deer Antlers are a great chew and last a long time.

I've never had a reason to buy a waterless shampoo. If the get dirty I can usually just rinse the dirty area off in the bathtub with water or use a small amount of shampoo if I have to on the affected area.

If they're not really dirty but starting to need a bath and I don't have time for a few days, I use baby wipes on the smelly areas. I find the wiry fur in the pants area gets pungent, even the parts that are always clean. Baby wipes always keep them smelling nice. I also use baby wipes on the fur behind Ginny's ears when it gets oily (Sadie's doesn't get oily)

I agree--Ice on Ice works great here for Bentley. He has particularly coarse fur, though, in my opinion.
