Weight Loss

Ditto my problems with Randy. He's eating 3/4 cup 2x/day of Avoderm. It has 298 cals/cup and he's not lost one ounce. I'm giving him until 11/14 and then we're going to take drastic action and go with Science Diet W/D. I know it's not good food, but it's the only thing my Cooper ever lost weight on. Our vet is zero help. She thinks it's useless, that we'll not be compliant with Randy and his food, so she's no help at all.

Any suggestions?

maybe a blood test for a possible thyroid condition? i just bought Oreo some food from a higher end pet store thats 90% protein and no grains. Its called instinct. Im miking it with the bill jack now to ween him off that and im adding a few green beens as well.

Ann, Baxter eats Drs Foster and Smith adult dog food fat content 11%. I haven't checked yet but I think they have a lite food. I've been hesitating on lite food because I would have to buy two different foods as Fergus does not have the weight problem so does not need lite food. I am going to try cutting back on his food a bit. I'm also going to try soaking it and adding the frozen green beans so maybe he won't feel so deprived. Thanks so much for the advice.

I've used the Dr. Foster/Smith lite food and it's really very good. It take some time, but they do drop weight on it. It's also a good quality food. Combined with the green beans, I think you'd have some success with it.

I have four Shelties and they each eat a different food, and different supplements. Two of mine have medical issues, and one a weight issue, so that's the reason. I just have four containers and a measuring scoop and go down the line filling dishes. You really do get used to it, honest!

How much does Randy weigh, coopersmom? Is he a very large Sheltie? If not, 3/4 cup of a good food like Avoderm sounds like an awful lot. Consider cutting him down to 1/2 cup twice a day with the green beans and I bet you'll see results, although it does take time I've found for the weight to come off.

I found Wellness lite dog food (fat 9%) at my local feed store and am transitioning Baxter over to it. I cut back just a little on the food and added green beans. I don't want to cut back much more as he only gets a cup a day(a little less now) and even at his normal weight will be a big sheltie.

He seems to like the food fine but the green beans not so much. He does eat them - after he eats all the dog food.:rolleyes2: Wellness is supposed to be a good food and the best part is I don't have to have it shipped. There was some mention though of it causing loose stools. We'll see how he does when he gets more of it at a time. I hope this helps him out.

Wellness lite is a great food...as long as he likes it and it doesn't make him loose (although the green beans could do that too) you'll be fine. Just be patient, it will take a while for the weight to come off. Good luck!!

If he doesn't like beans, try another veggie. we switch between broccoli, green beans and just added peas. All frozen- they didn't like canned beans

Yum, yum butternut pumpkin. mine looove pumpkin

Baxter loves pumpkin too and I do use it when I can get it but it's not always available. I'd stock up but usually when I find it they only have a few cans so hoarding is not an option. Apparently we've had two bad pumpkin growing seasons so there is a pumpkin shortage. I'm sure it'll only get worse with the pumpkin pie season approaching so right now poor Bax is stuck with veggies. I might have to resort to buying whole pumpkins and making my own but I hope not.

I've had no problems finding pumpkin in the grocery stores- even with the pumpkin holidays here. Pumpkin has been part of the overall diet for a long time for my pups so I buy it regularly. It's only been since someone on here mentioned frozen veggies which I bought for a pup that I was doggie-sitting, that I found out that mine would eat the frozen veggies. now they get lots of bulk in the bowls :wink2:
