Welll...the shelties killed a rabbit,but Earnhardt is not sharing~

Poor Earnhart - a ready-made treat right in his own yard and his people try and take it away from him! I would have done the same as you though, not liking the thought of him eating it.

Dawn's right - word will go out among the bunnies - stay clear of your yard!

Raw bones from small game are fine. It's fiber, and will keep him from getting cannon butt too bad. Yes,the thought of him eating the whole blasted thing,even now churns my stomach.Head and all....yewwww.

When Brian got home,he walked the yard,thinking he was going to find something.I told him the last time I had checked on him,prior to him getting home from work,Earnhardt was happily eating.I was pretty sure nothing was going to be left for evidence.Only the stains on Earnies muzzle was the clue he ate something.

I did'nt get to aweful close,as at that point he was nearly done with it.

Yes it is explosive loose sometimes from eating new things. Rabbit bones are soft and won't cause any problems when raw.Tons of people fed they dogs raw rabbits. I don't I'm allergic to rabbits and can touch them. Like Rachel say it will add bulk to the stool and hopefully he won't even get loose stools.

The biggest problem with wild rabbits is parasites. It could have had fleas, coccida(most older dogs fight it and its not a problem) ,tapeworms. Again like Rachel said, deworm him in a couple weeks.

As far as shelties and killing rabbits. Justice and Ember killed a rabbit a couple winters ago. Not sure which one actually killed it(but Justice had the most blood on him) but it was a great show of pack team work. I didn't see it but the tracks in the snow told the picture. Both dogs ran straight out , Ember went right and Justice went left. The rabbit turned into Justice and then turned back into Ember and then back to Justice were it met its end. :( Ember still loves to chase the rabbits thats how she hurt her leg, crashing though the liliac bushes after rabbits. I have no doubt she would kill it if she caught it. They are still dogs and prey drive is a powerful thing. Now meeting a rabbit that wasn't moving, no problem. For my JRT mix, it wouldn't need to be moving.
 
That is what I was afraid of a couple of weeks ago when Emma's Mr. Rabbit was in the yard. Thankfully I saw it and could get her back in before she saw him. I chased him out through the open gate.
 
I don't think I'll ever get used to the whole raw feeding thing. The thought of Meggie and Cooper killing a bunny just freaks me out. I know Meggie would have no part. She'd run after it, but then do the whole play bow thing then run back to mommy to tell me about it. But Cooper, I think he would kill it. Makes my tummy turn. I know, I'm a big baby!
