Were you nervous before getting a pup?

@jean and tessylyn

I do the same thing. ..I read and read and make myself paranoid about it i.....it's making me nuts. Weighing the pros and cons, and where will everyone sleep, and am I really up for training another pup up! Etc etc. :confused2::rolleyes2::gaah

oh boy do i have questions?

We found a wonderful pup from a great breeder and we basically have to decide if we're going to take her today, and I find myself going from happy and excited to nervous about the prospect of having a pup. Is that normal?

I've had a Sheltie before, have lots of experience and knowledge of the breed, know how to train them, groom them etc. We have a good home with a fenced yard, a cat, a 2 year old son.... We work close to home so can let the pup out during the day and my husband works from home Fridays and I get Mondays off during the summer, so really the pup would only be alone 4 days a week with a lunch break on all those days.

So everything 'fits' but I'm still nervous! I guess I know it's a big commitment and while I'm fully prepared I also have the jitters.

Anyone else go through something similar before getting a pup?

I'm in panic mode... I am suppose to get my first Sheltie in July of 2015. Terrified would be appropriate. I have an 11 year old dachshund, 16 year old mane coon cat, and a 1 year old rag doll kitten! I'm available all day long so that isn't a problem. We DO NOT have a fenced yard. I walk my dachshund, but with his age and little legs, he isn't going too far. I'm nervous about the activity level a sheltie will bring. There isn't anywhere safe to let a sheltie run off leash, sorry I'm 52 and my running days are over. I'm not sure if a 30 minute walk would be enough twice a day? What happens in the bitter cold winter months. We can go out for a short walk around the block, but there won't be tons of outdoor time. Should I reconsider getting a sheltie?

I would talk with the breeder and explain that you won't be able to provide a lot of intense exercise time for your sheltie and ask that he/she pick a pup for you that is more laid back in personality.

Some shelties are like BC's and need a huge amount of exercise to stay happy and balanced...and at the other end of the spectrum there are shelties who are pretty much couch potatoes and happy just to be with you at all times. For the more laid back personalities, a 30 minute walk 2x a day as well as inside games would probably be just fine. It really is so dependent on the personality of the particular pup you get.

But what I did experience once she came home was an unexpected hesitation to give her my whole heart. I was afraid that I couldn't bear it when the time would come for her to leave me. Then I decided that the love was worth it, and I threw myself into her life heart and soul, with never a moment's regret!!

I had the same doubt after my first dog passed....but I have given always my whole heart to each of them :hugs
