What a wonderful group!!

Welcome to the magic world of Shelties! I definitely recommend The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. It's available on Amazon. We have raised four Shelties "by the Monks," and people comtinually ask us, "How did you get your dogs to be so perfect?"

You may also want to consider getting Sheltie Talk, which we refer to as "the Sheltie Bible"! A little literary investment now could mean a whole lot fewer problems in the future!! :wink2:

I have ordered The Art of Raising a Puppy already, however I am finding it hard to get a new copy of Sheltie Talk. Is it out of print? If so, what is a reasonable price to pay for a used copy? I see some sellers offering it at $150 (which if that is what it is worth I will do it in a heartbeat) but I don't want to drop that amount on a used book that is about to fall apart. :confused2: Any suggestions as to what price range I shoudl consider for used copies?

Thanks!!!

I had heard that it was supposed to be reprinted but have not seen anything yet. Youmight be able to find a copy on ebay. That's where I got mine, or maybe it was Amazon "used"? I can't remember.

Neither of my 19 month old boys are crated anymore, but I still keep their crates handy. Bacca still sleeps in there, and Indy still eats there. It's still their "dens"

I had two crates for Indy - his downstairs crate was wire and just too heavy to heave around.

Bacca was always in a soft-sided crate (never any chewing issues), so I was easy to bring upstairs and downstairs every day.

I love the soft-sided for its transportability. It's great for cars!

And we have a larger one that both the boys can lie in when we are on the boat transporting to the cottage.

Highly, highly recommend the soft-sided.

Try Ebay. I picked up a very nice copy 2 months ago, for about $23 including shipping.

You will not find a new print of Sheltie Talk, and if you do,you will pay a high price. There are dozens of sellers on Amazon, offering used, and it is the first edition. I believe the yellow cover.I think the newer version has an oragne cover.I could have it backwards.

You might be better off to read the offerings on Amazon,as many of these books are gently used, and are of a better price.
I am reading "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete".It's very informative, and so far it is a good read.
Ebay has just a few listings of Sheltie Talk, but again, the bids go quite high,as I have bid on several, and it goes beyond the point, that I would pay for a used book.

I am still looking for a good used copy,as I have heard from many folks here, that it is an invaluable book to have if you own a sheltie.

Thanks for the wonderful input. I have found a decently priced, slightly used copy of Sheltie Talk which I think will serve me well.

I am so impressed at the quick response time of members and the willingness to help out one another. I said it before, but it rates saying again, I don't feel so alone in this new advanture and chapter of our lives and I know that Katniss and I both will benefit from being a member of this wonderful group.

Hopefully one day I too will be in the position to offer advice and assist others (or at least engage in great discussions!) But for now I have got the picture message :smile2: Lots of pictures are expected. That will be the easy part ...

I don't have much to add to the discussion here because everyone has give excellent advice, but I wanted to say Hi! And welcome! We are getting our second sheltie pup on the 27th, and she will be 12 weeks old. I'm sure we will be going through similar experiences, so it will be fun to hear how everything is going once you get your puppy home!

Welcome again.

The brownish yellowish cover is the older one. I actually remember that Sheltie talk book when we got our first Sheltie back in 1988. That book was like the Bible for Sheltie owners :biggrin2:

I just quickly checked Amazon used books too. It looks like you can get one for the low $20's.

Thank you all for the wonderful information - and warm welcome!!! Yes, Katniss is at 13 weeks, not months (she isn't even here and I am already losing my mind, lol)

Your advice on the crate is extremely helpful. I think my hang up was that I (personally) viewed the crate a "punishment" in and of itself, not really looking at the den aspect, or the safety aspect ... or even the personal space side of the issue. I know from the breeder that she runs free in the downstairs (with her dam and littermates) most of the day (under supervison) and the rest of the time she is in a pen. She is elimiating in one specific area. No crate as of yet. I suspect her first time will be the day she is put on the plane ... which raises my anxiety level as I am sure she will arrive stressed, confused and perhaps defensive. I hope the expereince will not make crate training difficult. :uhoh:

Jenny

I wanted to put your mind to rest regarding her travel. Deja's first time in a crate and only time in a plane was when she was flown to Alaska from Kentuky. THe night we picked her up she was a little scared but she didn't tranfer that fear to her kennel. We actually used the kennel she was shipped in as her personal Kennel for some time.. Ya know, I think it still might be. It was huge for her as a pup! Hehe.
