What to get first??

The "smelly" sock works great! When I brought Maia home with me, she had to be in an airplane carrier under the seat in front of me. To keep her quiet and secure, I took my shoe off and put my socked foot right up against the carrier's mesh window. She snuggled right up to it and slept with her nose right there the entire flight home! I too, had a blanket and some toys that the breeder gave me that had her mom's and her litter mates' scents - but she got those once we were home.

What to get first?

I like to have lots of old blankets (you can get them from a thrift store) and cut them to a smaller size to put in the crate for the puppy. I just dump off the poop and put blankets in really hot water and clorox in the washing machine. Or you can use newspapers, if you have a lot of them. Also, an old pillow and a plastic cover for it, but you may not want to use the pillow until it's pretty well crate trained. I'm so excited for you!!

all wonderful suggestions!! I also use washable pet pads. They are great for crate use if they have an accident just pop it into the washing machine. They come in paks of 6. Its a lifesaver! I also have pet stages puppy cuddle..its great to bring up to the breeder and let the littermates/mom play with and then bring back home. The EX-Pen is a lifesaver as well...my newest puppy spent the first 3 months in it...nice to know they are contained and safe but have room to investigate some!

I took the pad that came with his crate and wrapped it first in a green garbage bag, then wrapped that in old towels. As it turned out it was only an issue for 1 or 2 nights, but at least his crate pad stayed clean, and I only had to launder the old towels.

As for the smelly sock....I actually got this from the directions on the stuffed birdhouse toy. The instructions said to put it in my laundry basket for 24 hours so it absorbs my smell instead of the shop smell. Only problem is, since then Bacca is extraordinarily interested now in my undergarments!

Barb, Uhhhh, a smelly sock? Now that is a new one! LOL

It's funny, but our Sheltie will only play with dirty socks, not clean ones. He likes dirty underwear, too. :rolleyes2:

You must be so excited! We just got our first Sheltie last summer, and it's the best thing we ever did. I'd wish we'd done it a long time ago, but if we had, we wouldn't have gotten this one! :)

When do you get your new furry friend? In exchange for all the great advice you've no doubt gotten on here, you have to post pictures!
