What would you want in a "dog room"?

We don't use our "dog room" to house our dogs; they sleep in crates either in an outdoor shed or, if it's really cold, in the basement. Instead, it's for grooming and whelping puppies. It gets plenty of use on grooming alone.

Am I reading this right?Dogs are kept outside in a shed and if it is cold you bring them in the basement?

Like many, many well known, highly regarded show breeders, our show dogs benefit from the cold weather. It doesn't mean they live their lives outside.
Though the building started out as a purchased "shed", the inside is finished off for the benefit of cleanliness and comfort.
I invite anyone who has seen my facilty to comment on the set-up.
 
yes its really not any more of a shed except for the appearance of it on the outside. Inside is very nice! Alot nicer than the garages that alot of breeders keep their dogs in.
 
Dog Room

I am not a breeder so you guys know best.My dogs live in my house and have full acess to all rooms and of course they sleep with me.
 
I will tell you,I am with you MissJennyGirl on the sleeping thing. It does'nt hurt them one iota to be there in thier sleeping quarters. If my boys had been raised differantly,I would have from the get go,had them sleeping in a well maintained,temp controlled sun porch.
I think it benefits them tremendously in thier coat texture & also gives us (pet parents) a better nights sleep.
Unfortuneately...mistake made,and now no reversal. Cause I am sure I would have some very p**** off dogs being away from me at night.

So..with that said,I redid a bedroom,and got rid of the bed & ammenties in there,and made it into a dedicated dog room. Albiet I do not have a grooming tub in there,I am satisfied with how it looks,and certainly serves my purpose.

With my new work schedule & having to sleep during the day,and also Brian sleeps during the day,I know the pups are secure,and have everything in that room to be comfortble. They do sleep & play in that room,while we sleep during the day. Equipped with x-pens & crates,water,toys galore,radio...they are good to go.

Not saying,that when I do happen to be home at night,the boys (mainly Trapp) will stay on the bed all night.
Jasper will go in the dog room,and sleep in there all night. Blake is crated as well as Mia.
Both Mia & Blake have seperate x-pens for daytime safety.
 
From my experience of having my aunt be a sheltie/collie breeder and also from looking for sheltie puppies, it's very common for good breeders to keep their dogs out in a shed or something similar. It's one thing to have one dog or a few dogs with full reign of the house. It's something very different to let 15–20 dogs loose in the house. Most breeders need some kind of system to allow the dogs be under control. My auntie would let puppies in the house, and her heart dog Jenny, and maybe one other at a time if they were sick, injured, or needed/wanted attention. She only let the dogs in specified areas. All the others would sleep outside. Especially with collies, you can't have that many collies in the house. Her house was always quite nice and clean.

We did visit one breeder who kept her dogs in her house at all times and it actually kind of creeped me out a bit. She refused to tell us how many dogs she had and they were all stacked up in crates in the kitchen. And then she mentioned she had more dogs and crates in the basement but wouldn't say how many. Our whole visit she was very tense because she didn't want the neighbors to see how many dogs she had. I think she had a hoarding problem or something—just made me uncomfortable and we chose not to get our dog from her. The breeder we did use kept most of her dogs in a heated shed area although they are allowed in a certain room in the house (which was dog-proofed similar to what some others have described). Puppies are whelped inside of course. And she has a big backyard.

Personally we don't have enough rooms in our house to have a dog room. Every room is Buffy's room! :wink2: I think you need to have more than one dog or lots of extra room to have one of those.
 
I imagine the breeder may have been nervous as the AR folk put such pressure on breeders in certain areas or there is a ridiculously low dog limit law.
Mine all stay in the house. They are housepets first, show/performance dogs second. I don't ever want to get to the point where I have so many that they can't be part of the household. The number I have is more than most pet/performance only people, but it is still a number I can maintain in the house and enjoy.

Mine stay in the house also.I just can't imagine if your gonna have dogs keeping them in a shed.Why have them?Just my thoughts and nothing against any one here .
 
Have an indoor agility room :D:biggrin2:
with padded flooring/mats... and where you can store equipment and stuff!!
None of that silly bathing and grooming stuff ;) that just takes up space on what really matters, LOL
When Toffee and I visit we fully expect that, ya know?
