Whats With Golden-Doodles!

Sting plays with a GD everyday and she is a sweet dog but she was also raised right by her owner.I like the one Sting plays with but in general do not care for them at all.I actually called someone last nightn that was selling them in the paper and being the smart aleck I am was asking her all kinds of questions like did the parents have all the clearances and did the parents have any titles and why was she asking 595.00 for a mutt. She was none to happy with me.

Haha, I would have liked to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.

Luckily goldies are popular enough here that cross breeds have not taken off. But they have crossed just about everything else with a poodle - spaniels and labs being the most popular. And we do have several poorly behaved goldies around, on the whole though most are just a bit rambunctious but not aggressive.

One of the big problems with the poodle crosses are the average owner is generally inexperienced and dont bother gaining knowledge about dogs. While most pure bred owners take their dogs to training, poodle crosses, despite their popularity are rare at the dog clubs. The other big problem is poodle crosses are sold as 'great family dogs' and 'easy care' and the people who get them are generally looking for the easy way out or want a toy for their kids and arent willing to put in the work (and I add my brother to this list).

That said I do know poodle crosses that are great dogs, but their owners put in the work, socialise them and train them.

A worrying trend here is the crossing of small dogs with completely different temperments just because it sounds cool. Pug x JRT (Jugs) are popular - supposedly to 'help with their breathing' but many of these dogs die from respiratory and heat related problems - a high energy dog with a short nose, duh how stupid. I also saw a litter of chi x JRT - OMG talk about yappy and aggressive! And these little dogs are sold to families, on the plus side their owners rarely walk them so we dont meet them too often.

What I always keep in mind with these crosses, is.....

Would a respectable Golden Retriever Breeder EVER cross their animal with another breed. No. Never. That goes for all the mixes. A respectable Standard Poodle breeder would NEVER breed to another breed.

So....basically you are getting crap crossed with crap. So...you can expect nothing less than, well, CRAP. :biggrin2:

Just my opinion

Reading that made me so frustrated. I hope I never have to experience something like that, but I'm sure it's bound to as there are so many ignorant dog owners out there. I'm glad to hear that the firs owner took responsibility over it and made some changes.

I wonder if both dogs were from the same litter/breeder?

Personally I have met both goldies and poodles with dog-aggression issues. I have also met some exceptionally nice ones.

But the thing is they are both big dogs, and they can be a bit boisterous and full-on, and as my trainer says you never know what is going to happen when you mix dog breeds. She explains you are not just mixing appearances but even the way the dog thinks and sometimes the combination doesn't work.

Besides, of course, you have the 'novelty' value of these cross-breeds so that unscrupulous people breed them without concerning themselves with the parents' health or temperament.

And the owners you describe sound not just ignorant but down right unconcerned with letting their dog being a nuisance. They give all us owners a bad name!

Ohhh...I never thought of calling one of the breeders......My husband's friend bought his wife a schnoodle and had to drive to PA and pay close to 1,000 for it.......I asked them why they spend a grand on a mutt? Apparently everyone loves the idea that poodles are hypoallergenic...... They did end up adopting a second poodle mix from a shelter so I guess that they realized that they over paid for a mutt. Then they criticized us for purchasing Riley from a breeder....(duh...purebred w/genetic testing not a mutt). :eek2:

I will say that even though these are small poodle crosses, they're not the best with other dogs (love people). They have to be gated in separate rooms to eat and they don't get toys to play with or they will fight over them  I'm happy to say that Riley shares anything with other dogs or people and he's in a single dog household (for now......:biggrin2:). Maybe it really is something with poodles and poodle mixes. I know that my mother hates them ever since one bit her in the leg for no reason when she was younger....

I know what you mean. My neighbor has a little poodle crossed with who knows what and he has a terrible problem with other dogs. The only dog he gets along with is Fergus and that took some work. He and Baxter absolutely hate each other. Baxter is very good with other dogs except this one.The worst part of it is this is who we walk with. At first we thought they would get used to each other unfortunately it's been close to a year and uhuh, not happening. We put Fergus between the two as referee. If they so much as get a good look at each other all heck breaks loose.Strange thing is this poodle loves people, both kids and adults.

I hung up on her because she made me mad and she called back twice and I did not answer.:biggrin2:

LOL! I'm surprised that the breeder of such a 'high demand' litter would waste her time trying to contact someone who had no interest in her dogs. :wink2:

I love that you took the time to call her and ask why she was charging so much for a mutt. :biggrin2:

This is how I tend to think about this kind of cross, as well.
