I know that my daughter's sheltie took a long time to get length to her coat. She turned 4 in August and finally has density and length. There is a Terv out there that seldom has a coat to speak of but is a multiple best in show and best in specialty show girl. Her undercoat thickened when she was spayed but she never got length. There could be underlying causes such as thyroid, food etc. but chances are she is genetically programmed for a coat that is much more old school that we see in the ring. You'll appreciate it if you ever do herding!

Ok, I get the IDC crowd, but I'm on the I DO CARE crowd of maintaining the integrity of the Sheltie standard.
I personally have two Shelties who fall into the IDC category. I love them forever has my companion dogs, but I faithfully neutered them because they both carried "flaws".
So yes, I do believe in breeders who work towards strengthening and improving the breed. Both my breeders are those, but both my boys failed the "test" and so I am blessed to have them as my companion dogs instead. Many of their siblings achieved.
And I disbelieve in the notion of breeding dogs that have no hope of making standard. That is BYB, and I don't approve.
I'm sorry if that is an unpopular position. The reality is Shelties are still a young breed and in order to firm up the standard, very strict rules need to be employed to solidify the line. Ok, ducking now!

I don't think she has any plans to breed the dog. She is basically stating the same as you- she loves and appreciates her dog as a pet despite her not being a perfect example of the breed. That is how I take the I don't care. To be honest, most pet owners don't care that their dog is not the ideal dog as far as the standard goes. After all, that's what seperates the dogs who are placed in pet homes from the ones kept to show and breed.
