When Rescue Goes Wrong

There is a press interview with Piper's owner tomorrow (Tuesday) around 1 or so at her lawyer's office. They have asked if anyone is in the area and wants to show up to come and show support.

Am I missing something?

There does not seem to be any news here but only a rehash of what we already know... She will not give Piper back! Only delay after delay..

Why can't the court make her turn over Piper NOW? Even if she is placed with a third party as some have suggested at least everyone would know she is alive!

I just do not understand...

Dogs are considered property and they have to go through the proper legal channels. No one had gone to the news media up until today - because the bond was posted by the other side, they are now taking this step to put pressure on them to return Piper. The feeling is that public pressure & news media will accomplish something.

JLSOhio51, I understand your feelings. Stories like these raise serious doubts about the motivation of people. Please don't give up on rescues in general. Just know that like anything else, doing your homework is most important. The rescue community wants rid of the so called rescues that don't act in a responsible, professional manner.

I am doing sheltie rescue & also volunteer for an animal sanctuary in my area. I am a transport driver & do home visits for several rescues. That being said I have been on the adopter side & had not so good experiences with some rescues. The problem is there are so many & no real set of standards for them to follow.

There is a large group of rescues & shelters in Louisiana that network for the purpose of saving animals. We are constantly trying to fight the bad image that some irresponsible "rescues" have given the whole animal welfare community. The lack of standards & guidelines has led to our group getting together to work with the state to set up a certification program similar to the one in Michigan. Here's a link to the Michigan one - http://www.michiganpetfund.org/wp-c...gan-Pet-Fund-Rescue-Certification-Program.pdf

What's happening with Piper is appalling. Based on what I'm reading, she needs rescuing from the rescue! It's no longer about what's best for Piper but saving face for the rescue. Dr Phil would call them "right fighters". They are so wrapped up in proving that they are doing the right thing that nothing else matters.

I am very concerned that no pictures or info about Piper's condition has been offered. A neutral 3rd party should be appointed guardian until it's resolved.

I hope the last page to this topic will come soon, and I pray for a happy ending reuniting this dog with the proper owner. I am horrified by what has (and could) happen!

This issue is raising very good questions and starting much needed dialog, but I hate that it comes at the expense of Piper...

I totally agree, however this is an issue that is FAR larger than Piper and the COSR. Even though I too pray for Piper's safe return, I do NOT yearn for the last page of the dialog. No discernable oversight for rescues/shelters - breeder contracts with unenforcable clauses - folks who justify ANYTHING they do as "passion for the breed" - ALL of these allow trgedies like Piper's situation to continue to occur. The end of the dialog INSURES the continuation of Piper type problems.

I am proud of my local rescue (Triangle Sheltie Rescue). There was a 9 month old puppy surrendered because a family had spent $4,000 already on trying to save it's leg and couldn't afford another surgery, so they gave him up. The rescue repaired it, then made the unusual decision to let the old family have him back. To me, that's when rescue "goes right".
