I am not sure I'm gonna have the stomach for it either! Oddly enough, I watched YouTube videos of dogs eating whole bunnies and the mess isn't even bad! I'm picturing blood everything and organs... but they eat it from the head down and it's not too messy oddly enough!

but seriously, they only are interested in what mom gives them for dinner... they ignore chickens and don't even notice them for the most part. They know mom will take care of the food and don't even think of finding their own. Now not saying all dogs would be the same, like I spoke about the kibble fed dachshund that killed a chicken. One of mine is a mix with Cavalier King Charles and she will chase squirrels and bunnies, but she must know the difference between wild and then pets because she's been around pet bunnies and never acted interested in them. Given the chance, most dogs would probably kill a wild bunny, though!
 
I did look at the prices on the raw meats from the web site you added... and it's not that bad of prices at all... of course I only paid attention to the skinned and gutted ones. I've thought about going raw before, though I'm not sure it would be practical for the show dogs, but thought it was to expensive... but the prices do not look bad on there.

You know what's weird though... the thought of feeding the kitty a whole mouse doesn't seem like a bad idea... it's just the bunnies, chickens and GUINEA PIGS:gaah(I had one of those for a pet in the past!)

Yes, it's very MENTAL! It took me over a year to agree to feed whole prey. I had to work my way up to it and decided that I might as well save the money and do whole prey... I mean rabbit is like 1.50lb if you do whole rabbit! THAT'S CHEAP! I, too, was sooo happy with the prices on there. Plus what isn't raised on their farm, is sourced locally...no feed lots/hormones/antibiotics!
 
Oh I would love to get my hands on some real whole prey! (My dad's option of buying a rabbit from a pet shop is not one I will consider!)

All our edibles come de-furred and de-feathered. :( Most recently, I fed the dogs a wee suckling pig (processed and gutted) and that was the largest "whole prey" I could find. They had a BALL.

I posted some pictures and videos of them eating on their blog.

Needless to say I got the "omg, you're so cruel" and "your dogs are going to be aggressive and kill things" comments all around. :rolleyes2:
 
yes it is all mental! Shooting my first rabbit was the hardest thing I had ever done. I didnt mind the processing part, it was just doing the actual kill that got to me. But as others have told me at least i know the rabbit was well cared for and treated kindly before she died unlike most of the food we eat.

If you are going to raise rabbits for meat the best thing to do is to stick with a breed that they all look alike, such as new zealands and californias. Oh and stagger breeding them so that by the time butcher time comes you have another batch of babies to cuddle on, and the parents can be cuddled and loved.

Aw I couldn't buy a bunny that was raised to be a pet either. Although, it might be more humane to get them out of that pet shop! These bunnies had a good bunny life beforehand and they were bred with the intent to be eaten, so I really don't feel too guilty. Yes, it's not the most pleasant thing, but if I'm going to own a carnivore, I need to be able to feed it the right diet. People don't get snakes and feed them carrots, so why do we do that to our dogs?

I bet they loved that pig! I've given them entire deer legs and I've never seen them happier. It really gives them that mental stimulation that they crave and need... No matter how hard we try, a kong doesn't meet the needs of an animal LOL!! They behave better and sleep better and are just so much more satisfied when they get to have a huge gorge meal, and they usually always turn the food down the next day. I actually think if we had to point the cruel finger, they're the ones feeding a dog the totally wrong diet! LOL:razz:

Ps. This is off topic, but who reads these raw threads anyway?! HAHA! How do you like Singapore? Are you from there? I work as a court reporter stenographer/closed captioning, and they are always needing people there (I guess they do their court in English there) and they pay is insanely good plus the experience would be neat!! Going from America to Asia would be quite a culture shock.... better get prepared to spend more on the pups food it sounds like!!! LOL

As for the piglet - did you find that the dogs tend to get abit bloaty from all the tearing and such? I was just wondering if it was all the huffing and puffing they were doing that they took in more air than usual. They were both fine after (very satisfied and satiated) but I did get concerned!

JessicaR, I would like one day to be able to do that - rear animals for the dogs and then kill them humanely. I think the more involved we are in that process, the more respect we have for the animals! Pity the dogs don't like rabbit meat :( , that would be the easiest to start with (we had bird flu in this region some time back, so the government frowns upon rearing chickens and other fowl).

Kudos to you !!! There is a youtube video of a dog eating a still born goat!! I admire your attitude because this is probably good for our Shelties........ but I can't do it!! Sticking to chicken neck, backs liver and gizzards. Let us know how they do eating both the bunnies and chickens!! Good luck to you!
