Why did my puppy get seizures?

My little sweetie (20 months) had 2 seizures on Dec 21. After the first one we rushed her into the ER and they ran tests and checked her out. They were getting ready to release her when she had a 2nd one. They put her on the Phenebarb med and has not had another since. She is a TV stalker and is posessed by shadows and reflections. Any advice? Could the Christmas tree lights (stationary not blinking lights) have done this? Could it have been something she ate? What could have caused this? IS there anything I can do to AVOID another one? HELP!

There are some excellent threads here about seizures. If you search, you should be able to find them. We have members whose dogs have had seizures.

Heartworm pills, topical flea medications, flea shampoos, other shampoos, etc., etc.

Did she get any of those things within a week of her seizure?

Interceptor a week before shouldn't do it. However, has she had any vaccinations recently? My Pixie started with seizures as a puppy from vaccines. She was also sick from coccidia at the time. She had seizures until she was 4 -- we never put her on phenobarb, and treated her with homeopathic meds successfully and she has been seizure free for more than a year now.

As Rachel said, if you've a pup that's prone to them, stay away from chemical flea/tick meds etc. We only use natural products on Pixie now. We also switched her to a duck-based food rather than chicken/turkey based, which helped a great deal (Go by Petcurean). She's done really well on that.

Please keep us posted on her. I hope she's OK!

I am so, so, sorry to hear of this.. Seizures are very scary..

I do pray that your little one does not have another seizure, and can go off the meds in time.

April's had 2 in the last 5 weeks. She hasn't had one in about 2 weeks now, so I'm keeping fingers crossed. Prior to that, if she'd had any, it was unknown to me.

It's painful to see your loved little one going through it, I just held her and talked to her, even though I know full well she wasn't there for a big part of it.

Hope things clear up for you,

Cheers,

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. It's very scary, not knowing what is causing it.

You must rely on your vet for answers, and if you are not getting any, then get a 2nd opinion. Seizures don't happen "just because". This pup needs a full workdown to find the root cause.
