Why did you name your dog(s) their name?

Olive came with the name Bambi, but neither of us liked it. We wanted a strong female scifi character name - at first Anya was a contender but the idea of explaining to my PK/MK dad that we named our dog after a vengeance demon on Buffy didn't seem like a fun experience. There were a couple of other names we played with before deciding to go with one of our first options- Olive (Olivia Dunham in Fringe).

DH wanted her registered name to be Special Agent Olive (Olivia is an FBI SA in the show in one universe), but I wasn't convinced. We played around with other scifi references until we came to Pretty Floral Bonnet (from Firefly).

Phebe's registered name is <Kennel Name> As You Like It. Her call name is for the sheperdess character in the Shakespeare play. My bi-black puppy, who will be 14 weeks tomorrow has a Star Wars name in honor of one of my husband's favorite movie series. Since it's been a long 2 years waiting for Mike to be ready for a puppy, I wanted to name the puppy something that would appeal to Mike. This boy has attitude plus, so when one of my friends suggested Vader as a strong name, it stuck. Registered name is <Kennel Name> Skywalker Jedi Knight.

Fun reads!
I seem to like to name after characters/actors I love.
Callahan I got at age 1 with his registered name Law and Order and call name Clint. Clint Eastwood is one of my all time favorite actors but not a good name for a Sheltie, IMHO. So my favorite Clint character was Dirty Harry--while funny, not a good name for a dog LOL. Dirty Harry's last name is Callahan. Bingo!
Mackie was named after Steve McQueen in the Great Escape.
Kokopelli came with his name. Not changing it plus I like it :)
So I finally get to name my first sheltie puppy! We are huge fans of Firefly, so that was a no brainer. Call name was a lot harder. Ended up with Fillion, after Nathan Fillion. Checking the meaning its French for "last son". He was the only boy in his mom's last litter.

When I first got Mya....she was named Pico from her former owners.
I didn't like too much... so... I named her Mya... after the smart female huskey in ' Eight Below'.

Tinsel came 20 days before Christmas and was small and grey. Rhiannon is a moon entity and her registered name is Essence du la Lune. Phoebe came with her name - I wouldn't have picked it Her reg'd name is Charisma. Tardis was Forever In Time. Most of the names we have given as a call name have nothing to do with registered names. Tagg was always pushing her larger brother and sister around and we would call "Tag, you're it", Shona was Sasha's Wind Song so it is a compilation of that. Many of the names our guys have had are just names I like - Michael, Bobby, Leisha, Claudia, Tess, Tizzy (Simply Scandalous - and always in a tizzy) Meaghan, the list goes on and on.
The registered names always were based on a theme such as Time After Time produced One More Time, Once Upon A Time, Time's Own Measure etc.

Layla: DH chose the name from his travels in the Middle East. I wanted Juliet, but agreed. Then we found out that Layla is Arabic for Juliet!!

Little Bits: That's what we kept calling Layla when she was first home, so when we got Bits, we named her that.

Annie Laurie: She came as Annie, and I added Laurie after the song.

Beckon: I'd made up the name Beckoning Breeze and had it in reserve. When we got Beckon, we added the kennel name: Norwood Beckoning Breeze.

Why did you name your dog(s) their names?

My blue boy was named pup pup when I got him and did not like the name so changed it to Shadow because he follows me everywhere. When I got my sable boy the whole litter was done on a theme of the late Steve Erwin and my pup was named Crikey and I did not like that name so we chose Sting and his registered name is Dreamcatcher's Direct Hit

Then we got a cat, and decided to stick with the theme. I'm kind of a car snob, and my dad always had BMWs (despite being frugal in every other aspect of his life!) so, we named the cat Bimmer (pronounced "Beamer"). Bimmer is the German spelling of the nickname for BMW.

Sorry Bimmer, I've been saying your name wrong this entire time! I've been pronouncing it like rhymes with skimmer! Of course, the correct pronunciation makes more sense.. I always thought it was an odd name lol.

I got Brodie from a list of Scottish last names. My stepfather wanted me to name him Wee Willie Wallace after William Wallace and because he had a wee willie. That was summarily rejected.

When he was gone, we knew the next would be a girl. So, again to the list of Scottish names. Annabelle means something like "gift of God", so I chose Annabelle. Once I had Annabelle, then it HAD to be Annabelle Lee. Since she wiggles more than any creature I've ever seen, her registered name is Annabelle Wiggles LaRue Belle. The DH decided the next girl HAD to be Clarabelle. Tara was named by the people who originally bought her. As a puppy we called her Addy for Attitude, but when we got her back, she knew herself as Tara and we liked Clara and Tara. Her registered name is Addy Tara Lee Belle. DH wants all of our girls to be named "Belle". Bonnie was named Bonnie by my mom, because it means beautiful. Her registered name is pretty easy to interpret- Bonnie Thelma Lou Fife. (Who can guess where that came from?) At our house, she is Bonnie Belle.

DH says some girl he knew named Casey. Well, he says it a bit differently, but that is how I heard it. This was before I knew him ,so he was allowed to know "some girl" but...

Honey is named in honor of my husbands childhood dog, who in turn was named after his fathers.

His dad had a Sheltie named Mellie and so when Chris was young they got a rough collie and named her melon (collie).

When we were discussing dogs chris wanted as close to his one and only puppy as possible for an apartment so off we went to look for some shelties.

The initial plan was to honor his melon by following the pun...if we ended up with a boy it was going to be named Brock (collie) and if it was a girl (collie) Flower.

Once we found Honey and discovered she was a girl we talked briefly about the name and Chris jokingly suggested that we honor his Melon by calling her Cantaloupe. (At the time people were getting sick from eating them, and they were all over the news) I said that there was no way we would be calling our dog cantaloupe, at most she would have to be Honey Dew.

When we took her home we were still planning on calling her Flower, however after two times calling that out loud I realized that our joke about Cantaloupes had actually came up with the perfect name. Honey she was ever since.

(Which I think relieved his parents, who probably expected us to follow along with the tradition of the cats names... Kitty and Other Kitty.)
