winter coats for a sheltie?

Ah, to live in a summer climate year-round! (granted, I don't get hurricanes here!)

Yes, salt is used to melt ice on the roads. But is brutal on the environment. Funny how the same politicians who legislate away pesticides, are totally fine with salt and other chemicals being dumped.....you should see what they throw down on the roads come winter. It's disgusting :rolleyes2: Better to educate people on safe driving and snow tires (like they try to educate me to get on my hands and knees and hand pick the grubs out of my lawn!)

Do I sound bitter? LOL!

I wouldn't say it is summer all year round... we just have degrees of summer. :P And winter is shorter than other places.

Ah... well, we have a desalination plant that's awful for the Bay. Any where has their problems with chemicals versus other approaches. I would consider boots for my pups if they had to walk in that!!
 
yes salt on the roads to melt the snow/ice, its horrible and ruins everything including our cars, like we dont have enough salt where I live by the ocean!! The rust rate here is unbelievable! :no: I always wash my dogs off if they have been out in it.
I dont have jackets for my dogs either and it gets quite chilly here(below 0) and Ive had bitches that are naked that do just fine outside. If anything it makes them grow coat so they self adjust so they are not either too hot or cold. Actually had to laugh tonight I have a naked girl right now who I just noticed is outside (its 50 and very windy=chilly) shes getting herself ready to grow her coat for the winter since shes been naked since July. I dont put my dogs out or make them stay outside they all have the dog door so they can come and go as they please and be were ever they are most comfortable. So perfer outdoors some hate to be out, just like people.:winkgrin:

I have always had a winter coat for Ruckus, and if its below 25 degrees I usually put it on him. He is not coated like most "normal" shelties and they only undercoat he really has in on his pants! LOL
He needs a new winter coat, and I am beginning to question if it is really necessary. He has never acted cold.

We are very active and go for long 1-2 hr walks, we hike, and even backpack often. I figured if he was going to be outside for a long time he would be glad to have a coat.

What do you think?

I never bought my first sheltie a coat (or other type of clothing). Smudge is a different case though. Winter doesn't really go into full swing here until the middle/end of Jan. and it will last until the start of early March. This year everbody is saying we're going to have a bad winter. We'll see.

If Smudge has a mange outbreak (which means the fur will fall off and his bare skin will be exposed) then I may very well consider a coat. I'm thinking of buying one now just in case. I did get a hat/scarf set at PetSmart about a month or so ago on sale. It was $2 for both of them together, but I think he's too big for it now. Maybe I'll give it to my grandmother to give to her Pom! :lol:
 
Mine don't have coats. I did however wrap Maia up in a scarf and neck warmer when she was a puppy (2-5 months old) as she did not have a thick coat yet, and I do line in what we call, Winterpeg and last winter was bitterly cold. They do however wear boots. I take them out for at least an hour in the dead of winter and they are fine, so I am sure yours will be fine too!! If they can survive -30-40 celcius, they can survive 25 Ferenheight!
