Wish I could wait longer but...

I figure I will have to spay Bree at 6 months since I have a male in the house. After reading so much about the controversy of spay/neuter timing I find myself feeling incredibly guilty for spaying her that young. I'm rather afraid of her getting pregnant, though, with a male in the house, and I know most likely she'll be fine, but I find myself overthinking it and worrying far too much. Uhg! I figure I can wait until a year or even longer with Fosco, which makes me feel even more guilty because he gets to wait and Bree doesn't.

Sigh.
 
Bree probably won't go into heat until 8 months or so, so you could wait but I do understand why you wouldn't...the risk is just too great.
 
I’ll chime in and say going through a heat with an intact male in the house, while not super fun, is tolerable. We just have a rule that when we are gone the dogs are crated in separate rooms with all doors shut in between.

Other than that, we just kept an eye on them when together and they only spent about 4-5 days totally separated.

I think it’s worth the hassle for long term health :)

Hmmm...that doesn't sound absolutely horrible. It's not what I pictured. I've never in my life been around a female dog in heat. Will it be obvious when it begins? I better do more research. Also, for health benefits it is then recommended to do it after the first heat, correct?

They are separated a lot right now anyway for bonding purposes. They have a designated play time each day, otherwise sre with their humans.
 
If you read Karen's thread on Minnie's first heat, her heat was really not bad apparently although I think Sandstorm is neutered.
 
When my last girl would go into heat she'd start spotting and then I'd put a diaper on her. They aren't fertile at the very beginning of a cycle (it's nearer to the end but someone who breeds would have to answer that) so it's not like anything bad would happen if it wasn't visible right away. Just saying if your thinking about it.

I'm definitely thinking about it. I beed to know how long heat lasts and then how soon after to do it. After her first heat I could still wait a few months to spay, right? Because she wouldn't have another one for 6 months?
 
On average this occurs about twice a year or every six months, although it varies from dog to dog. When cycling first begins, there may be a great deal of variability in the time between cycles. This is normal. Some females take eighteen months to two years to develop a regular cycle

Sandstorm is neutered. Minnie's heat was VERY mild, so the only way I noticed was a first drop of blood, I THINK. If Sandstorm wasn't neutered, I'd be checking Minnie starting at 6 months old, for swelling, etc- vigilantly. I can see how this would be a pain. Doable, but a worry.
