Worried about Size

Our "late" Nicholas was a big guy...and he weighed 50lbs at optimal health. I never did measure his full grown heighth..but he must have been around 18inches. He was not fat at all...just a big guy with lots of muscle ;-). He really was more of a small collie though..he was a bi-black and you won't find a bi-black collie so he stood out among most dogs as a true beauty ;-).
 
Sadie was perfect as a puppy and her breeder considered keeping her to show. Good thing she didn't, as Sadie is now an 1 1/2 inches too tall (17.5") and weighs in at 24 lbs. She's also missing a few teeth, which according to the vet is better health wise, but would have also ended her show career.

I don't mind that she's a bit tall, she's otherwise gorgeous and healthy and has a beautiful temperament :smile2:

Nothing wrong with a bigger Sheltie. Just more to love! One of my grand-daugher dogs is close to 17" and 30 lbs. But she's beautiful!

Yes, it seems like Gus may turn into a bigger boy, but as MissSuzie said, it doesn't always turn out that way.

My first pup was at 13 1/2" inches which I thought was perfect. When he died and I brought Bacca home, I knew he was going to exceed standard, but I didn't reckon on what a difference 3 inches would make! He's almost 17" and 28 lbs of solid mass and long in body and neck to boot! But I really don't notice it anymore (only when I'm lifting him onto the boat). He acts like a small dog and does not sweep my coffee table clear with his tail!
 
I have an oversized Sheltie.

Blaze (tri) is 15 months old and weighs 37lbs! He is about 18in tall! He is not fat at all (in my opinion, he could stand to gain a few more lbs as he is very bony). On the other side of the spectrum is Lilly (bi-blue). She is 3 years old and weighs 24lbs. She's about 15in tall. She actually needs to lose about 4lbs (I can barely feel her ribs)!
 
Gus Getting Bigger and Bigger!

Well, back to the vet yesterday for the final series of puppy shots. The stats? 17.8 pounds and 15 inches tall. He'll be 4 months old on July 11.

When I expressed concern again about his weight, the vet checked his rib structure and said: "Hmm. Nothing at all major here, but he could stand to lose maybe 4 to 8 ounces."

Sounds like I'll be cutting back on the kibble... a pinch or two at a time.
 
My Coop was about 17 " and Randy is somewhere between 16" & 17". Believe me, it's just more sheltie to love! With Coop, our vet would say at every visit when Coop was a pupper, "He's going to double in size". Finally he stopped saying that and said "he's going to be a big boy"!

It wasn't a surprise to us that he is big..we wanted a bigger one and the breeder sure delivered..LOL
He's close to 19 inches and weighs in at 35 lbs. We have to watch his figure closely.cuz he's a chow hound!! LOL
Abby is a bit large shes at 16 inches and weighs 21 lbs...and its hard to keep her up to that weight!! Shes very active!! Plus..sometimes she doesn't finish her meals...which is odd for a Sheltie!!

Spencer is just over 16" and weighs between 27-28 lbs. I can feel his ribs and spine, but still was concerned that maybe his weight was too much. We were at the Vet's last week and I asked him; he told me that if Spencer lost more than one-half a pound, it would be too much. I'm done with obsessing about his weight. I know it's because Ebony, my bi-black angel, was under-sized and I had to be very careful to keep her weight under control since she would tell anyone who would listen to her that she had not ever been fed and was starving and my daughter and her friends tended to believe her!
 
I had to laugh when I read this. That's my Meggie, acting like a starved little girl! The other day dad had fed the dogs breakfast before I got up. This is unusual, so when I got up I fed them again. Dad's dog Lucy kind of snubbed her bowl which I thought was odd. Meggie woofed hers down, which I thought was normal!! She was saying, "Ha, Mom doesn't know we already ate, better get this down quick before Pop tells her!"

The weird thing is that before Meggie had another dog in the house, she was quite a dainty eater. She never finished her bowl in a single sitting and always would go back for a piece of kibble or two later. Now she's sure to clean the bowl, I think because she's afraid if she doesn't someone else will! Sounds like an unfed orphan, which she is certainly not!
