Need advice for extremely timid rescue

One other thing I wanted to mention is that Lucy goes crazy after I hold her, and rub her belly. She runs, and jumps wildly, and has tried to nip me in the face. It's not aggression, it's pure excitement. She's like a wild dog sometimes.

Need advice for extremely timid rescue

Thanks everyone! Yes, I have just learned that my tough love approach is not working. I can force her to walk but the fear is still there. I guess I need to modify my approach. I will try giving her some comfort when she freaks out, and praise her to continue. The obedience instructor seems...

Need advice for extremely timid rescue

Thanks for the advice. I will book a vet appointment. I will never put her on meds for anxiety though. I really believe I can get through this without meds. I was like a drill sargent tonight on our walk. I clapped my hands to get her attention, and gave her a strict command of let's go when...

Need advice for extremely timid rescue

Kimberly - I wondered about that too. But she hardly drinks any water. I give her a fresh bowl everyday, and she only makes a small dent in it. The rescue had her blood work done prior to the adoption, and everything was normal. Wouldn't a kidney problem show up in the bood work? I know a UTI...

Need advice for extremely timid rescue

I just read Tinsel's journey, wow. Lucy came from a breeding situation, but there were only 5 adult dogs, so not as severe as a puppy mill. But she was never a house pet, was kept outdoors (in a very rural area) in a dog run all day. I've had Lucy for a month now, and she has really bonded...

Need advice for extremely timid rescue

Hi everyone, I recently adopted Lucy, a 6 1/2 yr. old rescue that was never socialized. She is scared of everything. I live in a condo, so have to walk her for her potty breaks. Many times on a walk she will hear a loud kid, or something that spooks her, and she goes nuts. She starts...

Is this allowed somewhere on the forums?

Thank you for the response! I pitched this fundraising idea to the Colorado Sheltie rescue, and they are on board. Since this is going to be a Facebook auction, it will not be on the website, but will be on the Facebook page. They have agreed to get the National Sheltie resuce Facebook group...

    Hi from Denver

Thank you everyone! I will admit I've been overwhelmed at times, wondering if I could do this. Thank goodness the rescue recommended obedience class. It's helping me as much as it is her. This week the instructor told me to think of Lucy as a 6 1/2 year old puppy. I have to socialize & train...

    Hi from Denver

I'm not sure how to post a picture, but here is a link: https://picasaweb.google.com/dreibelbisdianna/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCMXogOPisp7-zQE# She has recently discovered the rewards of affection, and love that come from trusting a person. She goes a little crazy at times, and treats me like...

    Hi from Denver

Hi everyone! It's been many years since I've been on the forums. I wasn't sure I'd ever get another dog after I lost my last sheltie. A couple months ago I thought maybe I'm ready, but all of the rescues had special needs I couldn't meet (couldn't do stairs etc.) Then a few weeks ago I...

Is this allowed somewhere on the forums?

Hi all! I am working on something to be auctioned off on Facebook with 100% of the proceeds going to the Colorado Sheltie Rescue. I'd like to be able to let all the Sheltie lovers on this forum know about the auction when I'm ready to do it. It would help raise more money for the rescue...

I didn't realize it would take this long...

for my rescue Sheltie to bond. I rescued her a year ago - she is 9, very shy, but a complete sweetheart. She finally trusts me and has become my shadow instead of hiding. She is still scared to death of small children - not sure why but is comfortable with me - finally! :)

Falling in love with a new (older) rescue Sheltie

I got my first Sheltie when he was 8 weeks old. After 12 years together I thought he was the most amazing dog I would ever have the chance to know in my lifetime. He was so beautiful, sweet, smart, kind, and the list goes on. I lost him from heart failure in April and thought - that's it, no...

    Shelties Ashes

Chris, You are so right. What once were painful memories will now be great ones. Dakota loved playing in the snow, sticking his face in snow banks and how cute he looked with snow all over his face! He couldn't stop eating the snow and all I could think was "oh no, he is refueling" for another...

    Shelties Ashes

I have Dakota's ashes still hidden away - it was too painful to look at when I first got them. I am thinking I might spread them in the snow this winter - he loved the snow. He was my first Sheltie and so amazing, a truly beautiful dog in all ways. I never thought I could love another dog like I...
