    Mute Sheltie?

Unfortunatly, some breeders will us Double Merles, because they produce all Merle pups. But her breeder days are long behind her. She is well into her happy, playful, and somewhat lazy retirement days!

    Rescue Shelties

I understand both sides, the frustration of not meeting rescue criteria (like not having a fence) and the nervousness of the rescue trying to make sure a home is right for the animal. I really do wish that more rescues had the time and manning to be a little more flexible in some of their...

Destoying paper things is Snowy's favorite activity!

    To Vaccinate or Not?

Just remember, no vet can force you to have any vaccs given to your dog! (well, other than Rabies on your state's schedule, of course) I give DHLPP on an every three year basis to adult dogs, and rabies is on a two year schedule here is WV (it was three in Florida).

    Toothless Shelties

Whever my older shelties have needed a dental, we've always started antibiotics several days before to help ward off any infection. Anytime I have a dog go under I get their teeth done at the same time, especially with the older dogs. I think its about balancing risk, and deciding what...

    Toothless Shelties

I also try not to begrudge my vet his money (although I love to complain about it!) because I know they have a lot of scooling to go to, and a tough job. But it does add up, doesn't it? Just meds (flea control, Heartworm preventative, supplements, etc) add up big time!

    Toothless Shelties

Ironic that I have been posting on this 'teeth' thread, because today when cleaning teeth I noticed one of my (Sheltie-hound mix) Maggie's Canines is dying, turning red-black. She is 8 and has always had perfect teeth, so It was odd to find it darkening. Then...as I was picking up one of my...

    Toothless Shelties

I am glad that Ivy likes her "Senior Kong" as much as Snowy does. Snowy has a little dog blanket on the floor that I put the kong on, so as to save the carpet, whick works...most of the time!

Oh no!!! Is this hip dysplasia?

    Definately keep us updated!

Oh no!!! Is this hip dysplasia?

While I would never suggest excessively bothering the joint, I don't think feeling it once to get a better grip on what is going on hurt it more. I completely understand your point, Susan and blacknblue, that you shouldn't try to 'play vet' but a small amout of triage can help you decide on...

    Mystery at the Bridge

Thank you for sharing that story with us, Chris. What a special pair.

Oh no!!! Is this hip dysplasia?

Its hard to tell exactly, it could be injury related (bruised, pulled or torn muscle) or some other issue. Is your vet open on Sat so you can call and ask them what they suggest? Most likely, I would monitor to see if it improves, try to restrict activity, and bring him in to the vet at the...

    Toothless Shelties

Isn't it amaizing what a difference a little teeth care can have? I am always nervous to put an older dog under ansesthesia, but it can have a great pay-off in quality of life!
