I didn't say anything about leaving water in the crate. I definitely never left water in my puppies crates. I don't agree with restricting water before bedtime. She's making him go over 10 hours without water, which can lead to dehydration. Not good. Especially when she restricts his water starting at 9 pm, and doesn't give him anything to drink until 7 am at the earliest.

I greatly appreciate both of your points of view. I agree with you both, I am not leaving water in her crate over night.
I also do not want to dehydrate her and had not intended her to sleep all night long. I didn't make myself clear, as I did offer her water right up until she went to bed. I have had dogs for many, many years and on my vets urging, always had a cut off point for food, and water (later) each night. I have never had a puppy this young before though and I really didn't think she would sleep the entire 7 hours straight. We were up every two to take her out but she was just too pooped.
In addition, her crate is small - just big enough to stand up, turn around and then lay back down, so I know it is the right size for her right now. I really think, after everyones fine advice, that she was just tried after the cross country flight and exciting day in her new home.
I really appreciate both views (all of your views and advice actually), and I think that all agree on the fine points; wanting healthy, happy ... and not soiled, furbabies!!!

Yes! In all his crazy Christmas Eve excitement over Santa Paws coming, Beckon peed on my bed!!!! He was mortified!!!!

My mistake....I misunderstood your post when you said that all "puppies should have unlimited access to water".
Nope ... last night I got her up every 3 hours to go out. It was cold and we were all sleepy (my husband went out with us too) but we did it. She went the first 2 times, at 11:30 p and 2:30 a and then didn't go at 5:30 a. The rest of the time she just slept.
So far today there have been no accidents inside (we had 5 yesterday) and I have revised my style to house training her to more suit her needs and personality. What a wonderful Christmas present!
I have been meaning to post and share more, but with the Holiday and with Kai'a (we all finally agreed on how to spell it - the Hawaiian way) I have just been to busy ... and I can't lie, I would rather be with her than in front of the computer since we got her.
Can you blame me? Pictures tomorrow ... All of you have a very Safe, Happy and Merry Christmas and give all your furbabies some extra cuddles from us.

How old is this puppy? I think if you can put it in a crate, and it is weened, then it should be working toward staying dry overnight. As long as you get up in the night to take the pup out, you are training that behavior. Keep the 11:30pm as last call if you want, and put the pup to bed with an old towel for bedding. Your pup will get it, it might take a few days to figure out your schedule. I agree with Ann. We never recommend putting the crate in with you, because the pups wake everytime you move or get up.
BarbV, I would be very, very careful putting a garbage bag in a crate, even as waterproofing for bedding. If the pup digs around and starts ripping it up, or ingesting it, bad news. Just use old towels. I buy newborn baby blankets at the consignment shops. They are usually quite cute, and it gives just enough padding for snuggling, but not so much that the pups are comfortable peeing, and it "goes away", absorbed by thick bedding.

She is 9 1/2 weeks. You have a good point, and I was thinking about that earlier. As I said, we took her out every 3 hours last night and we had no problems, so I will use tonight to gauge things and try to take her out once. The thinkg is, as of yet, she doesn't tell us when she needs to go ... She is a sound sleeper and not only does she not wake easily she never cries or whimpers, not even a bark. It makes for a wonderful nights sleep, but it also means that if she has to go, she isn't telling us. We have a great room attached to our bedroom, and she is in the corner in that room. So far sleeping in her crate there, in sight of the our bed, is working fine.
Thanks for reminding me that if I start middle of the night potty breaks ... I will be doing a disservice to both of us

That sounds about right with the quietness. I got my pups around 8-10 weeks, and they didn't develop the HEY MOM I HAVE TO PEE RIGHT NOW behavior until they were a couple of months old.
Until then, Toulouse liked to "ninja pee" all over my new rug. He'd squat, pee, and be out of there.
