Ally is ill

Holding her own

For a small, sensitive Sheltie, Ally is a tough cookie in many ways. Her latest lab work showed improved BUN, creatinine at 1.8 (high end of normal), phosphorous still the same, so her kidneys are hanging in there. Her urine did show increased protein loss and some red blood cells which is a worry - but incredibly, her albumin (blood protein) is not only still normal, it actually went UP a little - a very good thing.

Her blood sugar was very low so we will recheck that, but she had vomited her dinner the night before and then was fasted 15 hours before her lab work, so we figure that's why. Although with her pancreas issues, it is a bit of a concern. We are checking her B12 and folate levels, as this can be depleted in kidney dogs, and can be a cause of depressed appetite. If all that is normal, my vet (who just went to a GI conference) thinks we should try a course of steriods to knock down the chronic inflammation in her pancreas. If it works, it may mean she will eat on her own again.

We're afraid to be too hopeful since nothing has really worked, but the holy grail is certainly just to have her eat her own meals again. Otherwise, Ally is acting her normal spunky self. We walk 2 miles a day, 3 on Sundays, and she is trotting along at the end of the walk in good form. Of course we are thrilled that she seems to feel that good, and my vet is too, but we are all still puzzled. Her quality of life is so good except for meal time, so we will carry on. :fl

And by tough I mean: a few days ago Faith accidentally bowled Ally over while they were chasing their stick, and she did a complete roll over, picked herself up and went at it again. :eek2: Not bad for an almost 14 year old "sick" doggie!!!

Sharon, Ally definitely is one tough little cookie. She obviously loves life and is going to get the most out of it for as long as she can...which hopefully will be a good while longer. Bless her heart. :hugs

Ally is going downhill. We took her to her vet on Saturday because she had vomited a lot the night before, although not food, just fluid. Labs show her kidneys are failing more, but she has also shown signs of some kind of neuromuscular problem. She is not anemic and her blood proteins are fine, so it's something else. She is now wobbly when she stands - just kind of half collapsing at times before she catches herself. But my vet agreed that she's not in pain. We increased the SQ fluid amounts to keep her hydrated and flush her out so she doesn't feel too crappy. But when she can't stand anymore, it will be time. I'm crying buckets as I type this.

I think the time is very soon that Ally, aka the Pipsqueak and many other nicknames, will join Asta at the Bridge. We'll just keep her safe and comfortable and evaluate every day. Thanks to you all for your support in such a long, grinding, sorrowful journey. I am grateful for all of it, especially Trini who has always been so understanding and supportive.

Oh, Sharon...I am so sorry that Ally is not doing well. Bless her gentle heart, she has fought a brave battle to stay as long as possible with the people she loves so much. I know that there are no words anyone can say that will lessen the devastating emotional pain you are feeling as you share these final days with her. She is so blessed to be deeply loved, but the depth of that love brings with it equal heartbreak. Sending you and Ally many, may hugs.

Aww, big hugs to you and the pipsqueak. Sigh, I know the feeling and I'm sitting here crying with you (trying not to bawl as I'm at work, ugh). You'll be in my thoughts. I'm glad I got to meet her. More hugs to you and the pack.

Oh Sharon I am so sorry that you are going through this. You and Ally are so lucky to have found each other in this life. Ally lived a life where she knew true love. Hang in there. I'm thinking of you.

Lots of love and prayers. This is a tough time, but she knows you love her and have done everything possible for her. That is the best thing any dog can ask for before they have to cross the bridge.
