Amber is having a medical emergency

We just called the vet for an update. They are still trying to get her stabilized and she has been there five hours. One of her kidneys has shut down and her liver is not normal. Her heart rate is still quite low and she might need a pacemaker if they can't get the heart rate up. She has gotten weaker and she is unable to stand or get up. She is dehydrated and they are having a hard time finding a vain to draw blood and give her fluids. They didn't say this but we know she is in shock. My wife and I were EMT's for 12 years. Her blood has left her extremities and is pooling around her vital organs.

She got so sick so fast its hard to believe this is happening. We have no idea how she got this or what she has. Right now they are doing there best to get her stable. When we called, the vet her self got on the phone to update us so we got the right information the first time.

Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers. I just can't think of loosing her at such a young age.
 
My thoughts and prayers are with Amber, you and your wife. I do so hope your vet can figure out what is going on and do what is best for all three of you.

I am so very sorry for you and your wife dealing with an unknown illness that struck you dear sweet little Amber!

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. I hope and pray they can stabilize her and get an ultrasound done to determine what is causing this illness.

My wife just brought amber home from the vet. She was telling me what the vet said. The vet said it is heart related. As my wife was telling me this amber threw up. One of the meds I take is clonadine 0.3 mg and it is a patch x2 . I change them once a week. Amber got into the trash and swallowed both patches. I don't think she got a full dos but it was enough to lower her heart rate. Its a good thing she threw up when she did because the vet gave us medication for her heart. So we called the vet and she said don't give her any of those pills.

These shelties are just like little kids. I will have to make sure I put my used patches where she can't get to them.

See the first thing the vet asked was,did amber get into any of our meds:gaah
This med is to slow my heart rate to help control my blood pressure. We are so thankful we have such a great vet.
 
Glad you have an answer. On to the road for quick recovery now. I know your feeling about meds. My Mom was on coumadin and heart med. She would always count with her tongue the number of pills she had in her mouth, just in case she had dropped one.
 
I am SO HAPPY that Amber is home, and that it sounds like she has ejected the offender. To be honest, I have been watching this thread all day and worrying that there would be a sad outcome. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road, and her body will soon be back to normal.

Don't beat yourself up too much about the patch. Dogs eat all kinds of unexpected things - it happens. If anything, thank you for giving all of us a reminder to err on the side of caution when it comes to the trash.

Fur babies can be worse than kids, because they can't admit to what they have done.

I am so GLAD Amber is ok, and I am so glad that you discovered the cause. So scary for y'all but now you have answers and that always helps to know what is going on.
