Are they over weight?

I know this sounds stupid, but what is the proper way of measuring ? Max is so overweight from all the cortisone he was on, that I am constantly battling with him because he does cry to eat a lot! I'm hoping he is bigger than I think. :) my vet isn't concerned but I am because my wily had hip issues and he wasn't overweight. btw we,used to free feed him because that was all we knew. Now I wouldn't be able to do it, Max bowl would always be empty :(

At this store we would buy our food at in Florance SC (Woofers) they sold plastic measure cups for measureing dog kibble. It has lines on it,so its quite easy.

I can take a picture of it later,when I get home from work. I think I paid .99 for it,and I keep it right in the bag.
 
I just got a cheap set of metal measuring cups that you would use in the kitchen. I use 1/4 and 1/2 and tossed the rest. So in the morning Spitfire gets a scoop of 1/2 then a 1/4+1/2 in the evening for his 1 1/4; Sca gets 1/2+1/4 in the morning and 1/2+1/2 in the evening. They were getting the evening measure at both and were gaining a bit to much.
 
And if someone else has to feed, measure the food into another container daily, marked with the dog's name if you have more than one, and have it ready to feed. I used to do this with Emma and Liam for the evening meal, and if I was late getting home, Dad could feed them.

This is basically what I do, but with just a 1/4 cup dry measure. At both meals Meggie gets a flat measure, Lottie gets a heaping measure and Coop gets two flat measures.

Michelle, I like the idea of bagging servings if Brian needs to feed them. I know when my daughter was here she was shocked at "how little" I feed mine. If she were feeding them I know they would get way more. At least one of her two shelties is overweight, maybe both. It's so easy to do, so don't beat yourself up. You take wonderful care of your pups and I know you'll get them back to where they are supposed to be.

Lol I meant to measure Max himself! :)
 
I feed Sandstorm Blue Buffalo, and like LightPlum, I give him a total of 2/3 cup a day. At his last weigh in he was 29 lbs, which the vet said was perfect, but he should not weigh less than that. I can tell when he weighs even 4 lbs more than that. I judge it by his waist, and looking at him from a side view. Good luck with your weight loss of your dogs.

Ya know,when we vacationed some time ago,I measured all the dogs kibble for our neighbor for all 7 days. I put them all in zippy bags,each dog had thier own small box with food enough.
But I did show Brian the lines on the cup,and showed him what the measurement was when he was over filled the cup. So he was really surprised at the amount he was actually feeding.

So,they are doing ok on thier food.We will monitor weights here and see how they are doing.
We have also found what we hope is the FINAL food forever. We have tested them with samples of Nutrasource,and they love,love it.
After lots of research,reading I found absolutely no issues,many awesome reviews, no recalls what so ever since the beggining of Tuffys introducing this food. Its made in US.

Tried it,after a few days (week maybe) Jasper would not eat. And he is a foodie from the get go. He hesitated even when it was put in front of him for the first time,but did eat. Then he got so he would not finish.

Mia even hesitated,and when she hesitates,then there is a problem. To me the food had an offensive odor. They ended up being nursed thru the bag just to finish it. Was offering the new food,as I had the samples.

I think we have found a winner. I hate messing with food,hate it with the passion. Since the issues with Diamond,it has been a nightmare.
