Aren't dogs supposed to anticipate earthquakes, etc?

I was at work, worrying about you and the boys! Then saw the news no damage nobdoy hurt, figured woulda just been barking sheltie mayhem! I don't know if they can feel this kinda thing ahead of time... Your Shelties aren't the subtle kind.. like mine isn't either, LOL

I was like ohnoes if that ever happened here, Toffee would e home alone!:(

Living in CA, we have them all the time. Gratefully, the big ones aren't often. My dogs don't seem to even notice. If they're on the ground, they notice it even less. No warning, nothing during. Nothing after.

They did notice the quake the other week, but that's because we were on the bed, about to go to sleep and the bed was moving and things were making noise. If not for that, they could careless.

I always thought dogs were supposed to anticipate it or something. But obviously, mine don't care. They are true Californian dogs (as in, we rarely care about earthquakes unless it's really big).

Here in San Diego we have been getting them frequently - my two furkids totally ignore them. When we got the 7.2 "Easter Quake" only Katie lifted her head, looked around, then plopped down and went right back to her busy schedule of dozing. Laddie didn't even move. I'm beginning to think nothing bothers these two.

Sounds like typical Californians. LOL. Mine barely lifted their heads for that one too.

We felt it here too. The building here often shakes as I work in an industrial area surrounded by train tracks. When my monitor and even chair started to shake I honestly thought it was just a big heavy train. I didn't realize till later that it was an earth quake.

Back home (almost an hour away) it was felt too. I'm sure the girls were probably barking their heads off but seemed no worse for wear when I finally got home. No damage in my area that I know of, I think we were too far away.

I doubt that they knew it was coming, but I would have liked to be there to see.

All fine here. No casualties in Ottawa. Heard a story about a guy fishing on a bridge who fell off, but apparently ok. One of my employees was at home on an 8 foot ladder at the time. He fell, but thankfully was fine.

While the quake registered between 5.0 and 5.5 (there are conflicting stories), it happened only 12 miles below the earth surface. Which means, even though it was not particularly strong, it was close enough to make it feel stronger. Many quakes can register 7 or 8, but so far down, that you don't even know it.

I wasn't particularly scared during or after. But I sure wish I'd been there for the dogs. Both to see if they predicted and to calm them after.

Some people at my office were really freaked. I was in a meeting at the time, and had two guys racing for the door frame to see who could get there first! Some people thought it was a terrorist strike. With the G20 meetings going on in Toronto, and the Chinese President visiting Ottawa this week, I can see how they could jump to that conclusion.

We weren't home when the earthquake happened, but we found out that Zoey utterly destroyed her favorite toy when we got home.

I guess she got scared.

Sounds like typical Californians. LOL. Mine barely lifted their heads for that one too.

Our's reacted the same way?! Guess they really do take their "cues" from their people..lol

This last one about a week or so ago....both boys totally slept through it. Being they were both asleep on the floor at the time...you'd think it would have sparked some kind of reaction.

It made me wonder if dogs don't necessarily react to a quake coming on...BUT....maybe they sense the intensity of it instead? Neither the Easter quake or the aftershock a week ago were felt terribly bad here...just felt like being on a boat in some wavy water.

We had a 5.4 near San Diego on Wednesday evening - 4:53 PM. I didn't feel it as I had just gotten into the car. The furkids were fine when I got home, normal walk and inhaled their dinners. All normal Wednesday night. Thursday morning, when I got up, no Laddie. He always hops on the bed as soon as I get up for his hugs and kisses. Katie lives on the bed. I wash up, get dressed, still no Laddie. Where is he? After looking around the apartment and not seeing him, I look under the bed (where he likes to sleep) and there he is....all the way under the bed, and he won't come out. Leash rattling, door lock opening - no dice. Finally had to get a piece of cheese to bribe him to come out, got his leash on, and he was fine. That's the first time he's ever done that -had me nervous all day wondering if he was sensing something I wasn't. At any rate - no aftershocks and when I got home they were both fine and he was up to his normal behavior again. Friday morning - back up on the bed as soon as I got up. Wonder what that was all about??!!

I'm sure if we had one here in Virginia, Layla would look up and say, "The earth moved for me. Did it move for you?"
