Arthritis?

Yesterday while playing ball outside Harper suddenly stopped beside her ball and picked up her back paw and held it up and stood stock still. I have never seen her do this before.

She was just at the vet two weeks ago where she had her bloodwork done for dental surgery and heartworm. She was fine and healed quickly from the surgery.

We had her nails done while she was under, I checked her feet and pads and there is nothing there to cause her to stop like that.

I carried her into the house and she was perfectly fine again. Then later she limped ever so slightly.

Arthritis? Harper is nine years old.

I don't know if arthritis would come on that suddenly. Your little sheltie may have strained or twisted it's leg. Keep an eye on it and take your sheltie to the vet if needed. My sheltie is very good at minipulating. He has had surgery and acts like it is no big deal. If he gets a little boo-boo, he thinks the world is going to end. HA! I love him for that.

I agree. You are more likely to notice arthritis in other ways first, like getting up stiffly from laying down or being stiff first thing in the morning. Probably is some sort of strain so give her a bit of a rest to let it recover - dogs are very good at forgetting they have strained something until they do it again. In the meantime keep an eye on her when she gets up and in the mornings and see if she is a bit stiff.

Thank you, will keep an eye on her when she gets up in the mornings and also getting up after laying down.

It was just so wierd to see her stop and hold up her back paw, no whimper, yelp or anything with just an abrupt halt, standing totally still from a running gait.

Hollie was also very manipulative. She knew that crying in pain, limping, or holding a leg up would get lots of attention. She would make the smallest bump sound like she was being tortured. I would agree with everyone here that she probably just twisted something. With some rest she should feel better.

Thanks everyone

Hey all,

Harper is a-ok and you all were right! I am so happy to say that to all of you.

We have made an effort on her behalf to get her to lose two pounds, just two. Had been feeding both Harper and Bridey regular Fromms but have switched Harper to weight management and she has already lost 4 oz. There is no issue with grains in the lower fat and protein mix.

:hugs
