Bad news about Hadley from Austin

The Sheltie Clubs and rescues of Austin are a wonderful first start and most likely could be your last stop. They will give you invaluable advice and suggestions on how to care for Momma and pups.

Also, puppies are usually super easy to adopt out, at the appropriate age of course 8 weeks+.

What a shocker for you, but you all will do great :wink2:. By the way, we're kind of neighbors, I'm in Houston

I would say that even if her dog is purebred/registered there's not going to be a good way to know if the pups are.....the previous owner sold her as spayed so 1) didn't know or didn't care about her female dog's reproductive cycles 2) did not notice the dog going into heat and 3) did not observe a mating.

So.....unless the dog was kenneled in a completely closed off area (i.e. chain link fences do not count) with a single intact male; you don't know who fathered these pups.

wow- what a surprise :eek2:
seems like everyone has pointed you in the right directions- good luck with the pups and maybe some pix when the stress levels come down a little :wink2:

I know exactly how you feel. I had the same thing happen to me many years ago. The dog was not a sheltie but a little poodle mix that had been running the neighborhood where she'd been living. She was given to me- a freebee gee I wonder why? Ten days after I rescued her I had four dogs instead of one. :eek2: Puppies can be a blessing when they are planned and expected but an unpleasant surprise when they're not. There are people here way more experienced than I am at caring for the new mommy and her babies so I'll leave the advice to them.
Good Luck!

I have no advice regarding the care of puppies--those experienced members on here have given lots of good advice already.

I did want to comment because I can only imagine the stress that this has added to your life. I am a grad student myself, and would find it very difficult to care for a litter of puppies. I think the best thing that you can do would be to contact your local sheltie rescue to get some help. You are in a tough position.

I also wanted to comment on your thought of suing the breeder for the $200 you paid for Hadley. I can only say that normally these types of lawsuits are not worth the costs and stress to the party who sues. I have gone through a civil suit before, and it rarely is worth it. Consider that in order to recoup your $200, you would have to spend quite a bit more on lawyer fees, court fees, etc (not to mention the time in preparation)... In your shoes, I would contact the woman from whom you got Hadley, ask if she would be willing to contribute some money for the care of the puppies. If she says no, wash your hands of her.

Best of luck!

That's why I asked I was thinking if they are that would be a miracle in itself.
I'm not interested in one I was just thinking along the same line you are Janet.

It's such a comfort to have very knowledgeable, experienced Sheltie/dog owners here. What an awful position to be thrown into a situation you weren't expecting. I hope you're able to find help from those suggested above. Good luck to you!

Oh my that is a shocker. You received great advice on your furpals, but if she sells shelties I would be calling ASSA, and AKC to place this woman on buyers beware list.

My very best to you. To have someone lie to you like that is just the pits.

Thanks for the advice. I will contact those two groups after I post this. Hadley is doing very well and the puppies seem to be doing well also. Hadley's going outside to the bathroom and eating and seems very happy and attentive to her babies. She's been eating well and plenty of food -- I went and got her the puppy food earlier. We have 4 boys and 1 little girl. They are all light brown, except the little girl is a bit darker. The owner contacted me to check on her and still swears she's never been in heat nor had babies before. She said the only males she has been around is another Sheltie and a Tea Cup Yorkie. I'll attach some pictures... I'm guessing it's too soon to know if they might be Shelties? Of course, I couldn't sell them or even prove they were full-blood. People keep asking how big they will be also. Anyone had anyway to gauge that based on their size now?
