Bad news for Little Bear : (

Awww poor Little Bear. I never heard of what he has. Just here to offer support and send big hug.:hugs it is heart wrenching when our fur babies get sick. Let's pray he stays in remission and with all of his meds will fee better real soon. Those darn ticks.

I know!!! I pulled 3 off him in one day. Haven't seen any since then but they are everywhere. My 9 year old cousin had one burrow into her leg one night. ICK! Im considering trying some natural repellents..my vet said they wear off quickly though.

Poor Little Bear, I'm so sorry that he and you have to go through this. I've not heard of Anaplasma. Hugs to you and pats for Little Bear. He's in my prayers for a quick return to health.

Aw poor Little Bear.:(

I hope the doxy kicks in soon.

Just curious how was the exact anaplasma sp diagnosed. Tick Elisa, PCR? Signs?

For those who haven't heard of Anaplasma here is everything you would want to know. Though a bit technical.

He had his blood tested, I'm not sure exactly how they tested it. But he was also tested for heartworm, Lyme, and Ehrlichia right along with it. I've read up on it and for the most part it doesn't sound life threatening but recent cases are posing suggestions that it's not as harmless as once thought. I feel lucky we found it because I guess it can be a bit elusive to catch.

If he was just tested with a 4dx test you can not know the species. We have a lot of anaplasm in this area(that which comes up positive on the 4dx) and most do just fine. The 4DX test is about 3-4 years old now so really unless one did a tick panal(titers) we didn't diagnose it much. If you don't look for it you won't find it. I doubt it is new(1978 it has been known) but I only diagnosed 1 case before the 4DX.

I am sending prayers for Little bear and a full recovery.

Ok, I talked to the vet and got some more info. She said they don't test for the Platys because it's not really found in the northeast-it's found in states like Florida, and it's also expensive to test for. So I was mistaken. The 4DX revealed that he has Anaplasma Phagocytophilum. The disease itself is not transferrable to people from the dog-only from the tick. She said that some vets choose to not even treat it if no symptoms arise but we're going to err on the side of caution and treat with Doxy once his antibiotics for his are done. Apparently vomiting and diarrhea and other gi symptoms can indicate this infection as well.

:hugs Hope Little Bear is feeling better soon.

I hate ticks, even here in the UK there is an increase in tick bourne diseases, especially Lyme.:(

Try Neem oil spray. I use it on our three Shelties. Great coat conditioner and supposedly the ticks and other pest hate it.

I don't use Frontline or other topical products. It's like putting pesticide from the yard on them. The manufacturer will claim it doesn't get into their blood stream, but how can it not? Skin is a living organism that soaks up all sorts of stuff.

I hope your guy feels better soon. Best wishes to both of you!
