Barking (yes, I know...)

Shelby does not bark for attention but she whines, stares at you, and chatters her teeth. We just ignore her and look the other way. She eventually stops when she realizes she isn’t going to get what she wants.

I know it is tough but we had a trainer once tell us to ignore the unwanted behavior and praise the wanted. And it does really work. When Shelby begs for attention like that she doesn’t get it, but when she is calm and not begging then she gets the attention. We did the same with crate training, we never let her out when she was barking (if we knew she didn’t need to go potty). When she was quiet and settled we then would let her out. The only thing is Shelby is VERY persistent when she wants something. So it does take a lot of patience.

We have done so much work on the barking and for the most part Cooper is doing very well. That being said today we had the same thing everyone else has gone through. lol. I couldn’t find Cooper, he wasn’t in his usual sleeping spots and the gate was closed so he wasn’t upstairs....hmmm....Cooper??? Nope!! Then I noticed the basement door was slightly ajar and you got it he went in, but in looking around the door had closed more and he couldn’t get out. lol. What the heck?? They certainly do have selective barking! :)
 
Toby barks at almost everything - thunder, visitors, any kitchen appliance, any yellow shop tool (all my tools are DeWalt), leaves blowing in the courtyard, crows that fly too close to the house, and occasionally at nothing at all. I know Shelties bark, but I have to admit it gets on our nerves sometimes.

I hear you....oh wait, I can't hear you....when you have five, it's hopeless. They feed off each other and they ALL bark. Lots! Flurry enjoys barking at nothing just to get the others going. The voicemail message on my answering machine is them barking. People think it's hilarious. :rolleyes2:
That should tell you all you need to know about my success rate training the no-bark thing. :gaah
 
I do try really hard not to feed into the barking unless it is clearly in relation to a disrupter. For instance, a big noise outside that triggers barking gets a treat which helps calm when accompanied by a request to sit or down. Indiscriminate barking at me is the most challenging. If I can ignore it long enough, she will often give up but we live in a condo with neighbors and cannot just let her bark indefinitely. Just now, she was standing barking at me and I asked for a sit, which she did. What she wanted was up in my lap, but she couldn’t initiate that herself by putting a paw on my leg. Mindy is not a real confident pup and I think some of her barking is because she is unsure. An ongoing challenge, for sure.

most of the time when my four go outside, they bark- sometimes at the neighbors but mostly at each other:rolleyes2::uhoh:
