Barkley's Mystery Illness

Talk about persistence on your part! Wow, you deserve a metal!
Barkley won the lottery with you as his mom.
Thrilled to hear he is eating again. As everyone commented... maybe now he will eat the back log of food with a topping of the booster!
We all have had times where dogs won’t eat and it is so scary! My vet prescribed an appetite booster when Mr Chance stopped eating. It did work for a while.
Fingers and paws crossed the appetite continues!

Interesting and you have to wonder why. Glad the appetite booster worked and Mr. Chance is back to eating!!!

Thanks Sandy, Actually Mr. CHance passed three years ago and I still miss him terribly. I have to say, the appetite stimulant pill helped him to eat and I do believe it did give him a few more months with me.

I apologized in a PM but doing so publicly as well - so VERY sorry! I corrected my post.

I am so glad Barkley started eating again!! Now I have another trick to use, thanks to your post, Ann. Thank you and WAHOO!!!

Here's the link, Chris. I love Dr. Becker's newsletters so I was happy to find this product: Dr. Becker's Appetitie Boost

The thing is it never seemed like he was just being picky. He acted like a sick dog who didn't want to eat. No energy, not much interest in anything but sleeping...it was so strange that we couldn't find a cause and all of a sudden he just snapped out of it. His vet and I agreed that if it happens again we'll do an abdominal ultrasound.

Just a thought, do dogs suffer from pancreatitis? Did Barkley's breath smell at all? I have a cat who has chronic pancreatitis, as well as other issues, but those are his signs and occurred to me when he was just with me. One of my tell-tale signs now for knowing an attack is imminent is his breath. Just a thought. I do realize cats and dogs differ.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sandy. Yes, dogs do get pancreatitis. It’s one of the many things we tested for, a blood test, and it was negative. That was one of my thoughts too, but no.

One of my vets suggested ulcers and had me give him a run of omeprazole for three weeks early on. That made sense too but the meds didn’t help. I still wonder if it was something like that though.

Not sure you are aware, if you are, please forgive the extra post on it.... Pancreatitis can take a LONG time to show up in normal bloodwork - again, my experience is with my cat so dogs may be different. Sam (my Siamese) has normal CBC type blood-work still to this day looks good but I paid a ridiculous amount to have one single test done that looks for a specific enzyme if pancreatitis is suspect. With Sam, this test shows as 'Spec fPL' and his results were way out of range - 3.5 ug/l is considered normal and his results came in at >50. Not sure if there is something similar with a dog, just thought I would put it out there if Barkley happens to have a re-occurrence.
