Bathing sheltie stunts coat growth?

Just to add to what Barb said about the feet, towel dry. If excessively muddy, I would use a basin with some warm water to wash the feet and then towel dry. This worked for Noah when the backyard got muddy. He got bathed 3 or 4 times a year.

What is the REAL difference...

4) I only use dog products. Maybe I'm brainwashed, but I do believe its better than people products - I like to assume that they've tested the Ph balances, etc. for doggie skin. But heck, what do I know?

See Im on the same page. I know humans and dogs have different ph balances, obviously. But im not sure if they ACTUALLY test on dogs vs humans. Im also not sure what the ingredient in our shampoos is that is not formulated to be used on a dog. No one has said what truley is the difference. I know on most non organic shamp/cond, the first 3 ingredients are usually the same as human shampoo... so is it really just a scam from these pet companies, can anyone tell me the ingredient in human shampoos that is not ok for dogs... or the ingredient in in dog shampoos that "works" on fur? I want facts, not just human shampoo has a different ph. because it dosnt state on the bottle the ph... so how can anyone really know...

UPDATE: So I havn't bathed Lacey for almost a month now, and I hate that her coat feels greasy and smells doggy. Is there some kind of spray you all use on your dogs that I wouldn't have to order online... I am soo tempted to bath her but I am listening to all of you and I know its not nessessary but is it doing any harm to her coat at all? She is 8 months and I want her to grow out that big coat ASAP but no one has told me if it will stunt the growth

No, bathing her will not stunt her coat growth. Puppies should be bathed whenever they need it. Otherwise they can develop skin issues and other nasty things...not to mention that greasy look and wonderful odor. How soon your puppy's coat will grow in is more dependent on her genetics, age and the season than whether you bathe her.

Just bathe her. I tell my grooming clients to bring their dogs back when they are offended. A good indicator for me is when I line-brush the dogs, and the hand that holds the hair down comes up greasy or dirty. That happened tonight with poor Evie. Black dogs never look dirty, and she was filthier than I thought. I used Head and Shoulders, because that is what was handy.

It should be ok to bath her monthly as long as you use a gentle shampoo, such as an oatmeal based one.

If you bath too often it can make the coat dry and their skin flake. Once a month should be ok though, just keep an eye on her.
