Bathing...with a touch of Ears

Whether or not to glue ears is really a personal decision. I decided not to do Ainsley's. Part of it was not knowing what I was doing on my own, but mainly it is because I like the look of upright ears. I think it adds to that alert sheltie expression.

I wasn't going to show her, so I didn't feel it was necessary. She is pretty enough as she is, and I am really not too concerned about what other people think.

Ainsley's trainer though complimented us on her nice ears. Of course, she breeds shepherds so I guess she is used to larger upright ears. :smile2:

I used detachol with no ill effects. I had tried goo-gone first, and would not use it again.

As for prick ears, its a personal choice if you are not showing. Bacca was never bothered by the glue....he was more bothered with my fussing with the glue! And I was bothered by the fussing with the glue, which is why I finally just gave it up.

Personally, I wish I had stuck it out longer (in hindsight), but Bacca is still a pretty boy, even with his "Eeyore" look! (p.s. I've got the opposite problem...not prick ears....hound ears!)

Cleveland's ears were pricked and HUGE! They were like satellite dishes and tended to work independently of one another which was not only charming but amusing. I thought he was adorable.

McKinley's are tipped and are very expressive as well. I find them charming and amusing as well. I think he is adorable.

I have never met a sheltie that was not just adorable, prick ears, tipped ears, doesn't matter to me.

OMGoodness! That's Trapp almost~ Satellite dishes...His ear leather was so thick compared to Jasper's.I did not venture to do the tipping thing with Trapp.Jaspers ears are coming along good.I'm not sure if ear leather makes a differance, but they are coming along good.

-- And Whiskey's ears are HUGE, I feel that they take up most of his facial expression, but I also think they give him character. Even though one of those characters you may not want to get too damp or feed after midnight

hahaha  if you get him damp- then you'll get more cuteness- but definitely no food after midnight

You know I have noticed that MMM's ear leather is softer and more pliable. Cleveland's ear leather was VERY thick. I tried for a year to tip Cleveland's and they refused. As soon as you took the tape out they stood straight up. They were a correct distance apart because of the tying, but prick they were and prick they were going to be.

Yes the ear leather does make a difference and should be considered when you are bracing and gluing.

Bacca's ears are very thin, and despite my attempts to brace between the ears, they just want to flop over. No support. I'm not sure that anything I could have done would have solved this entirely.

Indy's are very thick and in some ways, I think that makes it easier to train into position.

I think it just means that you use different techniques. Sheltie Talk and the Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Grooming are both great resources for different techniques, depending on ear set.

Phew...well I finally got the glue off! He was great for it, I was a mess.

I went ahead with the vegetable oil recommendation. I had gone to the store to buy detachol, but decided against it just for fear of reaction to his skin or mine.

The oil worked really well in getting the remaining goops out and he sat for it nicely, tail wagging the whole time, with me saying. "Just a few more combs I swear!" And Whisk on the on the floor giving moral support.

The aftermath...

So glad that the vegetable oil worked for you too. Now you don't have to worry about a bad reaction from using the other products.
Such a good daddy you are......Happy Father's Day.

That's certainly possible! They do have very similar markings. Duncan's face looks a little thinner but other than that they are very similar.

You can PM me if you do want to look into that :smile2:
