A mystery indeed, how very curious. I think that you and your husband might have hit upon the reason though with your chicken wrapper theory. I say this because Harper Lee was a very naughty girl last week.
She managed to get up on the micro wave cart, on the second shelf. The shelf is a good foot, foot and a half higher than she is high. I had a double wrapped bag of brown sugar tucked behind some cookbooks. When my husband and I got home Harper greeted us with an unpleasant surprise. She had managed to get up on that shelf, which is not wide enough to hold her and extract the sugar, bag and all and proceeded to eat the plastic and sugar.
I called the vet immediately, he told us to watch for any violent vomiting and if that were the case to bring her in pronto. He said a little vomiting was no cause for alarm. He also asked how much bag she had ingested, not too concerned about the brown sugar.
Thus began my archeological dig! As she vomited, I scooped up bag parts and recreated the top of the bag, she had destroyed. She got the whole bag up. After a little while the vomiting calmed down and as she had purged herself of the whole bag, I rested easier. She was understandably contrite and subdued and oh so sad to be puking, on the bed, on the carpet, on..... well you get the picture.
She had a little diarrhea, but things after a day or two got quickly back to normal.
There is no longer any brown sugar, or any other kind of food substance on any of the microwave shelves, even the ones that are four feet tall!!!
Hope things calm down for you tout sweet
