Best dry dog food?

I find this blatent advertising of dog food unacceptable, people are providing links to food, does anyone know if these people are sponsored by the dog foods they are linking you too

I am not sponsored by the dog food that I use.

Wouldn't that be nice, lol.

How can you tell how much protien they need? In rotating can you use like fish from say Wellness, chicken from Fromm etc. or should you keep in the same company? I talked to my vet once about high protien and she said her dogs did not do well on it.

Hi all,

What do you think is the best dry dog food? Right now I'm using Iams but I don't know if that is the best.
I use Blue Buffalo, we really like it. It has better ingredients than Iams, which we used for our old shepherd. They also have a web site. You will get other suggestions also.

You don't have to worry about what is the "best" if you feed a variety of foods. Just switch bags around, and buy a different kind every time. Then there is no stress about getting the "perfect" mix of ingredients.
We buy Blue Buffalo lamb, feed it for two months, then chicken, feed it for two months, then fish. That is how we rotate- but we stick with the same blue buffalo type.

People are providing answers to a question of what they feed. The dog food websites are on the internet for all to enjoy. People make up their own minds. The Blue Buffalo website I suggested is there-nothing wrong with that!

Gasp! I'm killing myself laughing with this post!

Just about everyone who has posted a reply to this thread has agonized one time or another on what to feed they dogs; many have switched brands numerous times to find the right food for their dog.

As Danisgoat said, I could only WISH that I was being sponsored for supporting their food. Help pay the hydro bill for sure!

The reality is that almost everyone who has responded to this thread are long time posters on Sheltie Forums. And while we don't necessarily agree on every topic, we definitely have integrity here. That's why we love and stick with this forum.

I ACCIDENTLY posted a new thread else where when I meant to ask in one of these threads but, I see a lot of sheltie owners are using TOTW (perhaps a lot of shelties like the taste) but I was a bit hesitant because I had heard a lot of things like vets finding urinary problems connected to the fact that the dogs all ate TOTW, etcetc. Though I dont know if there's any validity to these complaints and reports, has any one found any problems with the brand?? Otherwise, I may be very interested in trying some out as well! Please let me know :D

My vet told me the same thing about Wellness dog food, which was the food I'd been feeding my shelties.

I really loved Wellness dog food but my one sheltie had been getting a UTI every year. I read in general that dog kibbles that include grain can change the pH of a dog's urine and cause infections, so I've switched to a grainless food to see if it makes a difference. She's not due for a UTI till Dec./Jan. so we'll see what happens. :rolleyes2:

Sandy has a very sensitive stomach so I'm not sure If I should rotate his foods or not. He does well on his current dog food (except for the deadly farts but I think that's normal). :wink2: Does rotating help sensitive dogs or make them worse?

If your dog has a sensitive stomach I would wait on starting a rotating diet. Choose a brand, get her used to it, then try rotating. You may find that her tummy is less sensitive once she's on a very high quality food.

Wow. This comment shocks me, given that you're someone who appears to have been a part of this forum for some time. I would have thought by now that you'd know how passionate we are about our dogs diets and poop.

YES! So true, I DO wish I was sponsored because I HAVE agonized over what foods to feed my dogs over the years. I've spent FAR more time worrying about my sheltie's diets and poop than I have my own. And for the record, they probably eat better than I do too.

For the record, my three are doing REALLY well on Orijen 6 Fish, which is grainless.
