Best Time to buy a Pup?

winter puppy

We got Meggie last December. Someone had told us that winter was good because they don't like to be cold and it worked out great. I took her out she went immediately and we went back in. She was easy to train and goes on command. I say pee pee and she pee pees or I say poopie and she poopies. She had no intrest in playing just doing her business and coming back in. However, now at a year she thinks she needs me to go. She goes out plays with the other dogs and thinks it is just play time, she comes in and asks to go out again, if I let her out by herself she just stands at the door and looks at me until I go out with her and tell her to pee and she does and comes back in. She never goes on walks or any other place than her yard. At camp if she is on her leed she will not go but if I put her on her leash and walk her to the designated potty spot and tell her to go she does.

I can't understand people who don't seem to even care about the vaccines. My grandad saw a 6 week old GSD puppy running in the park with two young girls. They had just got him two days before. As if he had had vaccinations and that is a high dog traffic park. Some people just don't seem to care.

I would be more worried about a 6 week old puppy that had been separated from his mother and siblings that young. There is no reason for that.

I think there are some people who don't care, but there are a lot of us who have studied and researched are have come to the realization that current vaccine schedules are serious overkill.

My puppies had been to a friends house, my parents house, and a local outdoor agility farm before their first vaccine. They got the vaccine at home, and didn't go to the vet until a week later. They didn't get a second shot until 16 weeks. Of course I didn't take them to dog parks, pet stores, training schools, or any other pits of disease. You can build natural immunity through small challenges, but taking them to those high traffic areas is certainly not a small challenge, even for adults.

Well, I never know what to say on that one. I wouldn't ever take a pup before it was 8 weeks and has had a chance to get all that vital socialising time with its mum and siblings, but other people have shot me down in flames for saying that. (not on here :wink2:) Personally I will stick with 8 weeks.

Oh yeah, I agree with that. Cadbury went for short walks and met people and vaccinated dogs, etc before he was fully vaccinated, and lets face it he went into a vets surgery to get the jabs - worst place for sick dogs! We just avoided the parks until he was all sorted.

yeah, I have issues with vaccination timing as well, and it is a little oxymoron- need to socialize your pup most between 8-16 weeks and supposedly can't take pup anywhere because of no vaccination...

I took Diva to obedience classes with Justice and Ember starting at 9 wks. She traveled in her little carrier/kennel and I set her on a big table off to the side. That way she could see all the action but was safe in her carrier. Once she had her 2nd booster at 12 weeks she went to her own classes. I carried her around pet stores and shopping mall parking lots and parks and she met hundreds of people and never did her little feet touch the ground. :smile2: I had tons of older friendly adult dogs that I knew to help socialize her with other dogs so mixing her with strange dogs was never a problem.

There could always be a bad day during a puppies fear period, no matter what time you get them. It is important to get a puppy when it is going to work best for you.

I got both my dogs in February as puppies. We were supposed to wait until spring, but puppies we liked came along earlier. I however have no issues with cold/snow. I go outside barefoot in the snow without issues...

Summer/Fall is the best time to be starting obedience training in my opinion though!
