Big Boy?

PS anyone out there have a purebred Sheltie over 18" ?

Unfortunately, I wasn't part of this forum when I had my last sheltie and so I didn't know 'how' to compare her size with other shelties aka where to measure.

But Pudding was a purebreed and she was definitely very big, weighing in around 26 - 30 lbs (weight fluctuated as Pudding was sick and there were times of the year where she couldn't really get exercise and looked a bit overweight because of her meds and other months she was feeling very healthy and was looking a lot more fit]. She was both very big in my eyes and compared to all the other shelties we've ever met she was considered a giant. I've attached some photos, hope you enjoy

Josie is 19 wks and weighed 9.6 lbs today. I don't know how tall she is because she wont stand still long enough for me to measure. My best guestimate is that she is about 11" tall.

It seems like Tanner was full grown by the time he was about 7 - 8 months old. Pictures I have of him at that age look the same as now. I think he is about 17" tall but I'm not sure as he wont stand still either. He weighed 32.6 lbs today. He weighed 25 lbs till we got him neutered at age 18 months...... Been trying ever since to get his weight off he had gotten up to 34.8 so he's getting there.

Realizing pomeranians are totally diff breeds w/ diff growth rates, I will say that according to my poms breeder and the pom growth charts, she should have been a 6 lb pom..... She is a 10 lb pom but is not overweight at all. She just turned out to be bigger than "normal". Although, she is my 4 pom and everyone has weighed 10 lbs..... Go figure.

So what I have learned is I will know how big Josie "will be" when she gets there. :wink2:

Large Sheltie

Hi,

I like sheltie's on the large side too. We lost our Sable Sheltie a few years ago and he was a big boy by breeders standards, but I think he was just right. He was 18.5" and weighted in at 35 lbs. Vet said he wasn't fat...just large. We bought him from a very good breeder and agreed to have him neutered and not breed him. Too bad...they would have been cute pups.

Bigger than expected!

I was looking for an outgoing guy that would be tough enough to stand up to my daughter's pretty confident and muscle-bound terrier/chihauhua mix (24 pounder), Roti - the wannbe Rotweiler, and social enough to potentially do therapy work. Well, today at just shy of 10 months, Mac Attack II, a sable, is 19.5 inches and about 37 pounds. He is a real beauty and very social and has been mistaken for a small female collie. (Yikes, what will that do to his psyche?). When I see the two of them together, I think about the movie "Twins" with Roti as Danny Divito and Mac as Arnold Swartzenegger.

He has turned out to be a great "nanny" to my daughter's other baby, a little lab/pit x min pin puppy (Radinka "Dink")). Mac is amazingly gentle and patient with her. He always seems to know just how much play she can take, and sets the boundaries for her enthusiasm. Just don't touch the tail, Dink! He uses those long legs of his to good effect in settling (pinning) her down.

Now, working on his leash manners...

ALL of my SHelties, except for 1, have been BIG!!! CUrrently, my oldest, Dash, is 45 pounds, and over 20 inches at the shoulder!! He is also my biggest mush! ;) Just a sweet lovie! My Timmy came from a show breeder, but he is too big for show, at 37 pounds and very tall as well. My littlest, at the moment, is only 30 pounds, very long and muscular. My baby, Copper, who I lost last year, was jsut 23 pounds, and less than 14 inches tall, all fluff and love. They sure come in all shapes and sizes, as long as theya re healthy and happy, it's all good!!!! :wink2:

I got Beau at 8 weeks and his breeder said he was 8lbs at 7 weeks.
Now he is just over 11 weeks but he weighs close to 15lbs... He isn't fat! I can feel his ribs without pushing, he is just really solid with long legs. I'm hoping he is just growing really fast and will slow down soon, my Mom allowed me to get a sheltie (already have two dogs as it is) because our sheltie that passed 4 years ago was on the smaller side. She likes small dogs. She's on vacation for a month so I don't know what her reaction with be to my miniature horse here when she gets back :eek2:

Just an update after seeing the vet today, he is actually 7.8 kg (so 17lbs :eek2:)
The vet said to cut down his food, so I guess he is a bit overweight :o
I also finally found a measuring tape, so he is:

11 weeks, 3 days old
17 lbs & 12 inches at the shoulders.
