Bitsy's Liver

Many people do feed it every day; it certainly won't hurt them. I gave it to Pixie for all the years she had seizures but stopped it after she was seizure-free for a year. It's one of those things I would use on any dog that had a medical problem, but I don't use it daily. I'm actually not sure whether it's as effective if you use it all the time...probably a nutritionist or holistic doc would have to answer that. I do use it though all during a run of antibiotics and for about a month afterward and I would use it all the time for any dog who had any kind of liver or kidney issues.

How much and what kind and where do I get it???????? Can you tell I'm responding well to your suggestion?

Also, should I wait for the two-month report to come in???:confused2:

Chris -
I hope Bitsy's number are better in a few months.

I'm glad someone already suggested milk thistle. I've had Edan on some since his gallbladder was removed last July.

In addition to the links Ann provided, I wanted to add what I've been using to the list, http://www.naturesfarmacy.com/store/details.php?prodId=264&category=. It's a powder so I just add it with the VP. In this case it's 1/4 tsp per 15 lbs.

I hope Bitsy's numbers are better in 2 months! We have to get Greysons levels rechecked this month, as it has been 6 months since his acute liver failure. Seems to be somewhat common in Shelties from what I've noticed?

As everyone suggested, you can do no harm by adding milk thistle to the diet. It certainly seems to have helped Bacca's counts.

addendum: Reading this thread, I've decided that I may be paying too much for it from my vet. A 1.5 month supply costs me $60. Bacca gets two pills per day. I've never considered buying my pills online before, but perhaps its time for me to look into it.

Thanks Ann, I guess the 'if it's not broke, don't fix it' logic comes into play here.

Real good to know about giving it after a course of anti biotic treatment though.

Hopefully Bits improves for you Chris, and the milk thistle works too.

All good thoughts and prayers being sent for her.

I'll pull my numbers and post them so you can see how Bacca progressed through a combination of medium protein and milk thistle.

Will get back to ya!

Kate I think Ann uses the milk thistle during the time they are on the antibiotic. I just wanted to add I have been using it now for about a year or so for Gypsy, Ann recommended it when she was on alot of antibiotics and I continued it when I knew she had KD. I use the drops and just put them in her water each day.

Milk thistle and SAMe were the 2 supplements prescribed by the vet for a rescue that had incredibly elevated liver enzymes. They worked very well for her.
