Blue Buffalo experiences?

Try not to make your head spin worrying about food, unless your dog has serious allergies or intolerance to certain foods. It's easy to get overwhelmed looking at everything out there!

I personally feed Acana, but I broke down some costs by comparing similar formulas across Acana, Taste of the Wild, and Blue Buffalo. Since they don't all have the same size bags, I did it price per pound.

Taste of The Wild (Pacific Stream)- $1.60- $2.20 /lb
Acana (Pacifica)- $2.69- $4.20
Blue Wilderness (Salmon)- $2.70- $4.22

Keep in mind the price per pound goes down the bigger bag you buy, but that doesn't mean you should buy the 25lb bag that's going to take your dog 6 months to eat. I think a month is what people have said for the longest you should keep a bag of dog food. It's possible I'm totally making that up though lol. Plus you don't want to look at just price, you also want to look at the nutrition too. I feed my cats Blue Buffalo Wilderness, and they do great on it. I switch between that and Wellness.

I'm very partial to Now!

I like its protein mix of turkey, salmon and duck. Dogs seem to love the taste. It Canadian made and manufactured solely by the company, so less risk of cross contamination.

It's my second biggest seller in my store

I also like that the protein levels are not crazy high. It is a risk with grain free foods. Everyone says high protein is good ,but some breeds do better than others. I personally believe Shelties do better with a more moderate level....i.e less than 32%

I had Tinsel on TOTW Pacifica until Rhiannon quit eating. I then changed him to Go Natural as we had a large bag of it to use up and it is a decent food. He does okay on it and there isn't as high a fat percentage. However, his coat isn't as nice as it was - because there isn't as as much fat. I do worry about pancreatitis with the higher fat foods in these smaller beasties.
Phoebe, westie, is the first dog I have had that did end up with pancreatitis. She was on TOTW Pacifica, which is a moderate fat content, but had to be put on a low fat diet. The veterinary diet was 5% and $40 a bag (1.5 lbs) and not great ingredients so we looked into getting something that was close and came up with Natural Balance Fat dog, not much better ingredient wise but is 7% fat. I am not thrilled with her coat and she defecates 6 times daily on this stuff compared to 2 x daily on the TOTW but she hasn't had a recurrence of the pancreas so I am willing to do the trade off. I always tell the story of my bearded collie friend. She took a 6 month old dog to Cobo Hall where it proceeded to win BIS. She fed Pedigree with no supplements except an occasion glop of canned Pedigree. No repro problems, long lived, beautiful coated, energetic and healthy dogs. Hmmmmmm.

My first sheltie was born in 1992 before designer dog foods had been invented, and ate pedigree dog food until the last year of her life when she decided she didn't like the taste, and wanted the collie's blue buffalo. She lived to be just short of her 19th birthday.

Purina is suing Blue Buffalo for false advertising. It appears that independent testing has revealed that BB is using sub-par ingredients in their food.

.

Jess041, I totally agree. To be honest, I googled multiple brands and found horrible reviews on all of them :eek2:. But also found great reviews on some of the brands. Dog food is a very passionate topic! I know some friends that feed BB Freedom and my vet okayed it. But my vet was promoting Science Diet :rolleyes2:. I do like to hear about real experiences with BB, and I take brand to brand lawsuits with a grain of salt. :pop
