Bone/Fine Bone

I'd like everyone's opinion of this dog....

Does he fall into the European or American group? Or somewhere inbetween?

Based on his head, more European. Much finer boned than most of the American confo dogs that I see. A dog like him wouldn't get a second glance in my state.

In this picture we can only look at the head and nothing else, because he is sitting. This is a perfect example of a deep head. It comes across as a two piece head, an apple (skull) and a hot dog (muzzle). He is lacking a full rounded muzzle. The wedge we talked about would be very open. The stop is too deep. The standard calls for a "light" head, one piece, and this would be considered a heavy head. Now, I have to add, he is probably an absolutely wonderful dog, and loved by many, so please don't think I am taking anything away from him. Just using his head as an example.

Look at the head on this dog, and compare it with the sable shown. See the lack of depth, the amount of underjaw, and the head appears to be one piece. The stop is there, but not deep. The planes of the muzzle, topskull, and underjaw are parallel.

That is not a deep head to me. The muzzle is very foxy, and it looks like there's a bunch of fur standing straight up, so we can't see the actual shape of the skull.

Look at the length of the stop, and it isn't the fur on top of his head, as much as it is the throat latch.......where the jawline comes into the neck. Can you send us an example of what you think would be a deep head, and a light head? If the muzzle matched the skull on this dog, the muzzle would be massive and out of proportion.
Here is another example of a head with no depth.

Hey everyone! Deep breath, ok!?

I'm still interested in what the non-North-American's have to say!

I find this a fascinating discussion. I would say that its probably hard to truly evaluate a head from one picture...it would have to be taken at just the right angle to be able to tell everything about it, which is why judges in shows run their hands over the dogs to 'feel' the shape of the dog under all of the fuzz.

I really enjoyed the descriptions and diagrams on the clan Duncan site.

I have great respect for the knowledge of the members of this forum who show their dogs in conformation or compete with their dogs in agility and obedience.

Oh yes, I love the Clan Duncan website. Wonderful information....

And, yes I think the dog that BarbV pictured does favor the European style. I would like to here from the European breeders as well, as this has always fascinated me.
