Bone/Fine Bone

Wouldn't it be true that just as we all like different looks, judges would as well. As long as the dog is within standards, I'm sure there are judges who prefer larger boned dogs and those who prefer finer boned dogs.

And, just as with our human children, I think we're all partial to the dogs we have and the look that they present. I think all of our members who show should be very proud of their dogs!

Ok, this thread is starting to head into danger zone.

I would hate for this thread to be shut down because it is a fascinating discussion.

Deep breaths, everyone!

Narmowen, I hope you're kidding in asking about "his" head. First, it's a bitch. The following is the published critique written by the ASSA National Judge, Ms. Linda More, after awarding Annie, Best of Opposite Sex. I quote...
"This elegant curvy and ladylike sable of absolutely beautiful make and shape had a lovely one-piece head with sweet expression, good spring of rib and was nicely put together overall. These virtues, combined with her easy flowing movement, gave her the edge on the day in very strong bitch competition. As the saying goes, her biggest fault is that she's not mine. She and others of the girls were in strong competition for the Breed win along with the boys."

I think we will all show our beautiful dogs, and let the judges decide.

First, I didn't look at anything except for the dog. Male, female, it doesn't matter (except it looks male to me). Second, I really don't like that type of sheltie. It looks overdone, and much more collie-like than Sheltie-like to me. That, and to me, a dog should say "male" and a bitch's should say "female". With that dog, it said "male" to me. In the rings around me (and in SP, and other sheltie magazines), the females are really tending towards looking masculine. Not good.

Why would I be kidding about asking about the dog's head?

To me, this is a nice, feminine head:

It is true, when it comes to color anyway! When you start showing seriously in confirmation shows... you have to do some history on the judges.... and background checks to see what they put up. Some judges like and put up AOAC's and others will seem to put up only sables! You actually don't see a lot of finer boned shelties in the show ring. That isn't always, but a good deal of the time.

Yes, I as well don't like the collie type heads you find a lot these days. I prefer my dogs to have a much more defined stop. I see that showing up a good deal in some the lines like Apple Acres... They have some gorgeous dogs, but a few that I've seen for sale on everythingshelties... I haven't been to crazy about when it comes to the heads. And talk about problems creeping up.... did anyone besides me notice all the to short tails at the Nationals this year?

I've noticed the same thing with tails, just at the "local" shows around me. Makes me happy that Luke has a tail that touches the ground (tailbone well below the hock!) Okay, maybe his is a tad too long-he has to carry it with a slight curve otherwise it drags...

Macy's like that too...

Quote from Sheltie.com about Shelties in Finland:

"Here the shelties have less muzzle, less bone, and in many lines less coat. The head is also different: less underjaw, eyes and ears are bigger."

And the kennel (Finnish) and their dogs:

Maybe I'll just move to Finland...lol

Ryan, Harley and LeAnn are American dogs. Nothing about them is Finnish. Leann is an export, and probably Harley also, since the pedigree is totally US. Harley just happens to have another kennel name. Debbie is an export also. They are lovely dogs. If you like their look, you can contact Jean Simmonds of Carmylie. I believe she lives in Virginia.

Look at the length of the stop, and it isn't the fur on top of his head, as much as it is the throat latch.......where the jawline comes into the neck. Can you send us an example of what you think would be a deep head, and a light head? If the muzzle matched the skull on this dog, the muzzle would be massive and out of proportion.
Here is another example of a head with no depth.

I for one think she is a beautiful girl.... and I see a good profile on her... it is just the way she is holding her head.

Did I say that they were Finnish? I said that the kennel was Finnish. I'm fairly certain, especially since I'm working on a MLIS, that I have excellent reading comprehension. http://www.veramente.pq.pl/litter_p.html .

If others can show what their ideals are, I'm certain that I can show what mine are.

:rolleyes2:
