Can a Neutered dog "tie" with a female in heat?

That is rather unusual as bitches tend to only come into heat every 6 months or so, but there are factors involved. I know that sometimes a bitch will go into an early heat when the alpha female goes into heat, since you don't have an unspayed female, I'd check with your breeder friend.

Will do exactly that ;-)... Thanks so much. I really appreciate all this feedback.

The bitch is most likely having a split heat. The first heat cycle looks normal but maybe be shorter and they don't ovulate and the signs go a way and then 2-3 months later it starts again and the eggs that develop ovaluate at that time. The second heat cycle is usually the fertile one. Not uncommon in young bitches on the first heat cycle. It usually straightens out with continued cycling as they age. Although, one of my friends has a Rott who had split heats until she was bred at 3 yrs(one every 6 months followed by one 2 months later annoying:rolleyes2:)

Yes neutered males can tie but usually unless they were used for breeding prior to neutering, they show no interest in the bitch or their libio is not high enough to preform.:smile2:

Wow...this is really interesting to me. I'd never heard of "split heats". I took her to a local vet that I'd never been to before. They offered $5.00 rabies, and she hasn't had her's yet. He said they don't do vaccinations when a dog is, or might be in heat, or pregnant. Now that this came up, I figured I'd have him check her out to confirm a "heat" cycle. He explained to me she is a very "special" dog...being a "show dog," (although they are all equally special to me) and he basically wanted to cover all his bases... After examination, he gave me an estimate of all the tests he'd want to perform to rule out a heat cycle. He said nothing of "split heats," told me a 2nd heat this soon was very unlikely, and also didn't turn her over and check her vulva, however he did check her from behind and confirmed there is a bloody discharge. Is that unusual not to examine her from the underside for this "complaint?" Anyway, he also explained being she's a show dog...(possibly future)...he felt compelled to give me best case and worst case scenarios ranging from an early heat or infection, all the way to pyometria or cancer. After reading his estimate of $704.00, I opted to call her owner (no brainer!), and I plan to take her to our regular vet this afternoon. The "split heat" really sounds like the answer to me, and I'll keep it in mind at our next appt. today ;-).

Thanks SO much!! Can't tell you how much I appreciate your input. I do realize that without being able to have x-ray eyes (lol), this is only an avenue to keep in mind, and not an actual diagnosis ;-). Good and comforting info to have in my pocket though..

Yes, they can! I had it happen with two of my Dobies. And to make matters worse, my male had been neutered two months previous, but still had "life" in the pipes. My female got pregnant!

I was astounded. I swear I had the only dog in Delaware who got bred by a male with no gonads. :eek2:

lol...that is sadly hillarious! lol

I really question why this vet didn't mention the possibility of a split heat...

Holy cow! The time frame that is considered for "life" in the pipes past neutering is considered 3-4 wks. That is certainly bad luck. Wow 2 months must remember that.

Don't know why the vet didn't mention split heat. If his interest is not canine repro a lot of vets don't know past typical normal and spaying. I would defer to my peers regarding horse repro. It is in there somewhere buried behind the pig medicine.

neutered Ruckus tied with Lynn on her first heat before she was spayed! I was shocked.
Ruckus was neutered at just 4 months old. and he will still try to breed any dog in heat, and he smells where females have peeed and he slobbers and chatters his teeth!

Oh these boys will be boys, won't they! lol

Just got home from my own and regular vet. His opinion is classic "heat cycle," but explained what to watch for...but absolutely didn't expect anything out of the ordinary. He was familiar with the term "Split Heat," but admitted to not knowing much about it. Anyway, my mind is relieved, and our little houseguest will be going home on Saturday for a few weeks...and then YEAHH!! she will come back for awhile longer. I've sure grown to love that little girl! Til Saturday, she's sporting around little boys underpants, worn backwards with her tail pulled through...but all is okay because they are Scooby Doo!!
