Can dogs go senile?

The answer to your question is yes, dogs do go senile. There is actually food and meds to help when they do.
However, I agree, this sounds more like a pain response. BTW, licking of the face and ears is not always a friendly interaction.

I've always wondered about that, but everywhere I've read it says it's a good sign of dogs getting along. I've thought, just by looking at their expressions, maybe it could be showing dominants, challenge, or even submission, depending on the situation.

Marque licks ears. But usually only River's ears, though I have caught him licking the puppy's ears. River is a screaming *******, going from happy and playing to snarling and nasty. Marque licking his ears looks to me, based on timing anyway, to be a calming mechanism. But I really have no idea, River has always been a conundrum.

I was also thinking it is a pain response. But he might also be only able to tolerate small bouts of play before he feels overwhelmed. Merlin can be like that with other dogs, though not with Cadbury, but then I can tell when Cadbury is pushing him too far and make him stop.

I fully expect Merlin to become a grumpy old man who gets fed up being played with!

I remember a Leonberger that was dog friendly but had arthritis in its paws. It would play lovely until a dog came near its paws, even without touching, and it would become aggressive because it had associated pain with a dog being near its paws.

After 3 days of being on Cosiquin Max I've DEFINITELY noticed a big difference in F-kap's joints. He's a lot more playful and less temperamental. He's still a bit of a grouch though, I guess that's something that'll never change. Oh well, he may be a brat but he's MY brat and I wouldn't trade him for the world!:biggrin2:

A friend of mine has a 15 years old Spitz - Nero who permanently forgets where he is. Therefore he keeps barking ALL the time - fortunately she has VERY tolerant neighbors. Sometimes he just gets stuck in a corner in the yard and she has to come over to turn him 180 degrees back - he is not able to solve this situation by himself any more  But Nero is a healthy old dog, he only needs some extra care :o
