Cancer

Jasmine's good health otherwise is in her favor. We'll all be praying for you both as you walk this path together.

what would you do?

The lump was measured at 3cm which apparently is right on the dividing line of good/bad prognosis. The oncologist is suggesting either a lumpectomy to go back in the inital site and remove more (to guarantee they have clean margins) or a radical mastectomy to remove all mammary glands and lymph nodes so it has nothing to spread to. I asked my vet what she would do if it was her dog and she said she would do the complete. Difference is more extensive surgery of course with longer recovery. Chemo would be decided based on the biopsy results.

I have read several articles and it appears there is not a guaranteed difference in life expectency so I am concerned about putting her thru this. I do want every minute of quality life I can have so I don't want to regret not trying everything.

What would you do?:confused2:

Jasmine

Sending you good thoughts Jazz Mom, for your little Jasmine. Shelties have a most spectacular way of beating the odds when it comes to illness, in my experience.

My little blue merle, O'keeffee had a sinister diagnosis of nasal carcinoma from a lump we found on her neck. The prognosis was not good. Our vet gave her two or three months as the cancer had spread and there was nothing that he could do.

Three years later I lost my O'Keeffee. The vet said that he was glad that she made a liar out of him. Her quality of life was astounding, and it was only when she let us know that it was time that we let her leave us.

Please keep in mind that dogs are people too and people beat the odds every day.

Best,
Kate

I am so sorry. I will be keeping you and Jasmine in my prayers. Shelties are amazing and rely on love for their strength. I know that you love her. Take each day that you have and cherish it. Many dogs, like people, survive cancer and beat the odds. Keep positive.

Jazzy is home!

Surgery is over and Jasmine did great. Thank you for all the good thoughts. She looks cute in her big plastic collar! Incision is about 12 inches and sore looking but she did great. Biopsy is back and cancer had not spread to any other gland or lymph nodes. All clear! :smile2:

I am now on full scale spoil Jazz alert!

Thanks for sharing the update, and I am so happy that they were able to get all of the cancer out.

Here's to hoping for a quick, uneventful recovery. Please continue to update us!

From one cancer survivor to another, way to go Jazzy!! Now let Mommy spoil you. My mom spoils me everyday!

Lottie
