Colon Cancer

and i NEVER put a blanket statement that Chemo was wrong. I said Chemo is justified in Dogs if the Possibility of CURE exists.
but many owners do opt for the chemo even with no such possibility exists just cause we JUST Can't let go of a Loved animal we hold so dear. Our LOVE for the animal sometimes over shadows what is truly beneficial for the animal......

Thank you Ann and Ariel for your support, understanding, and respect while I am dealing with Dakota's illness. Ann, I am so happy Ivy is doing well on chemo....and I can only hope and pray that Dakota will have a postive outcome too (unless God heals him). Thanks again...your support and kind words mean alot to me!!

Becky,,i Truly apologize if i came over as a Insensitive baffoon. It is a big decision with chemotherapy. Consult with a Vet Specialist that works with Cancers. Ask for a Referral. I know the Specialist can be very expensive,,,,if the money is a issue, then you can go to the Nearest University Vet hospital....specialists there are much more willing to work out the payment in more reasonable manner.

Also becky,,,, If the chemo is what your dog needs,,,,,it is not so unreasonable to use it if it will lessen the pain and make the dog feel better... but if there is no possibility of cure ( meaning tumor will shrink at first but eventually it will just outgrow the effects of chemo ) and side effects are bad( you will be able to tell in first few weeks--also Vet specialist is useful here) then it just isn't worth it. Ann's dog is somewhat lucky if truly the dog isn't having any side effects from the chemo. Most chemos do cause really bad side effects......

So it is a Big decision and i am sure you will choose wisely. and we never like to talk about costs but when the bill starts to pile up,,,trust me,,it is a consideration that you cannot avoid--speaking from 1st hand experience--last dog died of Liver tumor. -- spent over $15,000 overall.....

FedAce-

Thank you. Our family would never do anything to extend Dakota's life by a few days/weeks. First, we are hoping it is nothing and Dakota will live another 10 years. If there is something...we will weigh our options and try to cure it. If there is nothing the specialist can do we are going to try and maintain his quality of life so he does not suffer. I understand your opinions...I am just going through this right now...and it is hard to deal with. I was not offended...I just need prayers and kind words right now. Thank you for your advice...we are going to see what the specialist recommends. We were really just caught off guard with this....because we took him to the vet thinking he had another problem (that was previously treated). This week has just been so horrible. Thanks for caring enough to respond.
Hopefully today we will be able to set up the appointment at the specialist. We were given the cost beforehand so we know what we are getting into. I hope your day goes well.

^^I understand Becky about being caught off guard. I cried with my dog at my side for good 5 days. I will pray for your dog's recovery and hope your loved pet can pull out of it.

I actually had to put one of my cat's on chemo. He did pretty well...and really was tolerante to the side effects. Its hard to decide what is right for each siutation. Dakota is only 7...not 15 yrs old. We feel like we should exhaust our options and give Dakota a chance. We will do whatever the vet specialist tells us. If there is nothing they can do....we will keep him on pain meds and other options to give hime quality of life (no suffering). I know how expensive some vet bills can cost. They do pile up..but we do what we can because they are family (as I can tell you did from your 15, 000 vet bill). All we can do is trust God and pray for the best.

I knew it was too quiet lately...

I'm glad to see Becky & FedAce have made up & gotten back to the topic at hand without me having to say anything.

Shelley...your post was inappropriate, rude, inflammatory...and a quick way to get banned. You need to go re-read the rules!

As much as many of you may disagree with what FedAce said (and/or the "tone" they chose to say it in) people are entitled to their opinions. It is your choice to agree, disagree & discuss...just keep it civil!

Grrrrr!!!!!

I'm putting my "beat the forum members" stick away now. :wink2:

Dakota cancer

We are sorry to hear about Dakota, but dont give up hope. Our second sheltie "Dundee" was found to have stomach cancer at the age of seven. We were offered two options surgery & chemo or put the dog to sleep. After much thought & discussions with the vet we opted for the surgery expensive yes bit considering the joy she brought to our family we decided to opt for the surgery. To make a long story short Dundee not only survived the surgery
& a short bout of chemo, but lived another seven years:smile2:Please keep us posted as to how Dakota makes out:smile2:Cody Wendy Cole & Jones(aka the cat)
