Continental Kennel Club questions

lilypop vs gus gus

My 2nd sheltie had HUGE paws to fill, my 1st was such an incredible dog. She wasn't as smart, didn't train as easily, but in her own way proved to be just as special for just shy of 17 yrs. Now with Kaleigh & Savannah, they are precious in their own way and I am hoping for another decade or so of love and devotion from them. Each has gifts to impart :wink2:

Lilypop forged the way for your sheltie experience, and I trust Gus Gus will teach you new lessons and make great & different kinds of memories that you will cherish. Pedigreed or not, he is for the journey now, to write new chapters, believe that he came to you for a purpose and reason. Enjoy and keep us posted how this new one adds to your life!!!

Wow,
He is a wonderful puppy. He is occupying my time, now, instead of me grieving over Lily. There is the stigma tho, about him being a replacement for Lily. That is something that he will never do. >>>
Gus Gus will have every opportunity for a happy life that I have within my power to assure him of. >>>

No, you never can "replace". Little Gus Gus will find his own place in your lives and he is so very blessed to have been given into such a loving environment. Most of my rescues are not registered and I have no knowledge of their background...but that doesn't in any way lessen the joy they bring us or their right to a happy life.

Customer Service Wins

But if my dogs are registered with the AKC - the club that has maintained the stud book for my breed since the 1911 - and if they can be shown at AKC events, why would I want to cross-register them with a club that offers no events (OK, a handful of "sanctioned shows" in Columbia, Mississippi) and was founded in 1991?

As a breeder, why would I pay more (even the $5/dog bulk discount CKC offers to those who register more than eight dogs per year) to cross-list my dogs with what is the registry equivalent of a diploma mill?

If CKC is such an excellent registry, why won't the Canadian Kennel Club accept CKC-only Shelties for registration?

Take a moment to educate yourself regarding the impact of better customer service: http://www.helpscout.net/75-customer-service-facts-quotes-statistics/

Breeders choose to dual register because of a better customer service experience with CKC has always provided. I can't tell you how many times I have heard dual registered breeders citing a better customer service experience with CKC as the reason why they left AKC.

CKC may not have as many events, but every club has to start somewhere. Yes, CKC was founded in 1991 compared to AKC's 1911, so how in the world do you expect them to have just as many events as AKC?

And the reason the Canadian Kennel Club won't accept CKC shelties for registration is because they are a different type of club altogether -- Canadian Kennel Club is a closed registry. Continental Kennel Club is an open registry.

I'm proud to be a third-generation AKC breeder.

I'm quite happy with the customer service (and the Canine Health Foundation, and the Juniors Scholarship Program, and the system of parent and local clubs, and...) that AKC provides. I can't say I've ever had a bad experience when I've had to speak to the ladies in NC to sort something out.

To gain a little extra perspective, I thought I'd call my mother (who's been breeding and showing Shelties in AKC for twenty-five years) and ask her if she's ever felt the need to dual-register her dogs with CKC... she laughed so hard I had to put the phone down.

So, that's just two women's opinions. I suppose we've just been involved with AKC for too long to really be objective - but if it ain't broke, why try to fix it?

As a breeder of shelties for 26 years and an American Kennel Club Breeder of Merit (http://www.akc.org/dog-breeders/breeder-of-merit/requirements/)
I have to say, I certainly would never (read NEVER) register my puppies with a paper kennel club. I am also a member of the REAL CKC, that would be the Canadian Kennel Club.

These two organizations have a depth of canine history that promotes the purebred dog. I am proud that a portion on my registration fee goes to the AKC Canine Health Foundation, to help in the research of canine illnesses and diseases.

I appreciate that my stud dogs are required to have DNA testing with the results on file at AKC to protect my breeding program.

I appreciate that the American Kennel Club does kennel inspections when there is a need.

I am proud that when there is a catastrophic event that impacts the well being of dogs, the AKC steps in with food and trailers that are mobile vet hospitals.

THE ABOVE LIST IS THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I COULD EVER HOPE FOR.

Another AKC Breeder of Merit here (though not with 26 years of breeding experience).

No, I have never registered, will never register, and have never offered or been offered CKC papers on any dogs I have sold/purchased. I know not one breeder that dual-registers with AKC and the Continental Kennel Club.

All of the CKC "registered" dogs I have seen have come through the rescue from local pet stores. That's telling to me. It's not like we can call those breeders to take their dogs back, can we?

It's a paper registry set up so that commercial breeders and pet stores can claim "registered" dogs to people who don't know the difference. I see no evidence to the contrary in real life, regardless of what a website says.

Let's break it down and expose the Wizard behind the curtain...

CKC is committed to providing every breeder, owner and dog with a superior membership experience. Joining our club is more than a decision; becoming a member of CKC is a lasting and rewarding experience. CKC combines quality canine registration and record-keeping services, unlimited educational resources for dog owners, economical breeder programs and incentives, unique canine products and packages with excellent customer service to ensure that the needs of every member are met.

What would be a "superior membership experience"? What aspects make it a"lasting and rewarding experience"? What is a quality canine registration, thicker paper, fancy graphics? Next....we are all required to keep records, and since our dogs are all AKC registered, their quality record keeping of my dogs goes back probably 30 generations or more. That's high quality!
Unlimited educational resources....hmmmm.. AKC Meet The Breeds, Breeders Workshops done by Claudia Orlandi, health clinics, etc, all available to everyone.
Incentives, oh yes, the elusive "incentives". Unique canine products, what could that possibly be that we haven't seen before?

I believe this whole paragraph is beautifully written with buzz words and no substance.

That is what I learned when I went on the CKC website.

Customer Service, already addressed it, and by the way, with a paper registry you only speak to them once, to send the money, and maybe if you have a question. I can't think they are on speed dial.
