Cross your paws:flyball

YEy Sca!!!!!

Hurray to the beginning of a very promising career I believe.

Kyara is holding both thumbs up for your performance!

Great job, especially getting three cleans in the right lane before he crossed. Its really hard for a green dog to stay focused when there is a lane on their turning side so he did particularly well getting those runs in. It just looks like he got a little distracted and forgot what he was doing when he crossed.

Sca will get some great times once you can focus on your passes. He has good speed on him dare I say he's looking like a BC!

I picked up a trick from a team mate to get a dog to focus straight ahead - Deska spins given half the chance. I keep my right hand on the harness and my left on his side, sort of hip/groin area and it prevents him spinning or looking behind.

Thanks! In the later videos I am pushing his backside around some. Some of it is also I tend to not line up straight myself as I am just getting going also :biggrin2: I need to figure out some ways to do that. I can bowl him in practice but due to space we tend to run one lane so it is different.

As to the border Sheltie the faster times were with the 3 BCs and he measured bigger than 2 of the them  He is kind of the opposite extreme of your guy or even Duncan (Lovely's pup).

We are on again in December down in Talladega so I am hoping for a bunch more good runs. If I could bowl him in we could probably drop at least a second but right now that would be really iffy on crossing (a slow dog in the other lane would help)

I watched ALL of that video - was totally hooked. Sca was having great fun! He wanted to extend that fun to include some other dogs, but like you and the ref said - he meant no harm.

One thing that helps Duncan is that I don't let him become reactive, either by revving him the entire time the other dogs are running or blocking his view of the lane with my body. It doesn't always work, but I try! Also, in the tournaments I've been in, you would have been told off by the ref by being so close to the line. I know because it happened to me multiple times at Duncan's first (and only) tournament! (Second tourney this Sunday - hoping he doesn't chase also!)

Have you considered props for the warm ups to improve his box turn? I know NAFA allows that - not sure about U-Fli.

Man, that one Border Collie was just screaming at the other team, huh?

Can Sca take passes? Is he just as reactive to his own team as he is the other team? I ask because Duncan can take a perfect pass (actually, if I send him early, he slows down and then speed up at the right time, it's freaky!) but if he is losing just a little, he can't help but to start chasing. If he's winning, he's fine, but I guess he's not a great sport.

Sca is pretty unpredictable right now  He did pass Reggie (King Charles Spaniel) in the video but passing his girlfriend Angel :eek2: In practice I can bowl him and he is fine 99% of the time but we can only run a single lane due to limited space right now.

Strange on the line. Everyone just warned me to avoid crossing it as that is the same as a jump start. The team actually told me to get close though as I had to wait for a pass then line him up so sitting back is just more penalty.

Props are OK and we use them in practice but time is limited so a run back and one or two warmups is about all we could do. Also we were short people and had to borrow a loader and ball retriever since there was a total of 4 of us. Yep we even had to borrow someone to run Indy (BC #1) but that is not an issue as everyone loves to run Indy. She is a character. She runs for anyone and the barking at the start is her complaining we aren't going already, also her reward is a laser. Indy is #61 in points in 2012 and that does not include the over 1000 she got at that event.

As to positioning I need to watch the video myself and take notes before the next race. In the one that Sca ran next to the jumps then chased it was 100% my fault. I didn't even realize it until later. Watching the the vid I realized that I stayed up front trying to catch him to turn around and if I had backed up like normal I think he would have run down fine (well and need a rerun for skipping the jumps). Also I need to rotate myself according to others and it will help his pointing.

We both have room to improve but I was hoping for a SINGLE good run so he did well. I am headed to the race track for me this weekend then we have 2 practices before his next race so I am hoping for great things from him. I can see 5's soon with his final in the 4's but would be thrilled to see a 6 next time.

Ah, bowling... that's something that I've tried VERY hard to stop. It helps if I put a knee on the ground and hold Duncan by the hips. If he's really revved, I can pull back and he'll leap forward when I let go. If not, I either hold the harness back a little or pull his hips up just a tad, which simulates the restraint. I haven't worked out whether harness of hips are better. He knows his harness is his uniform and when it's on, he gets serious about the the box and the ball (serious = barking head off and running himself if I don't hold him 100% of the time).

Anyway, Sca did really great. I'm jealous that he only chased as little as he did! Maybe I'll have some videos to compare after tomorrow. We are also short on people, not on dogs.

Oh - Duncan got 5 pts his first comp - no title. It's pretty awesome Sca got two! I'm not concerned for tomorrow, though. There is another green dog that I have to alternate with, so I doubt we'll get any major time unless Duncan is totally on. We will see!
